So, I have a dark spot appear on my lip a few months ago, just appeared overnight, like "bam, let me ugly your lip for you" :haha: Its small, but noticeable as I have quite full lips.
My question is, should I be using a UV blocking lip balm to cover it? (its not something I would buy normally as quite expensive, so want to know if I should). Does anyone else have one?
Cheers!

I have one on my lower lip. Looks like a dark freckle. I haven't given it much thought to be honest!! I know Nivea do a decent SPF lip balm. I have tried it but ended up having a mouth tasting of chemicals!

Absolutely you should.
I have a quite a few moles some from birth others have come over time and I always an spf on my face and factor 50 on the moles on my body.
I'm quite tanned naturally so moles are a problem for me.
I would suggest that if you've just gotten a mole to show it to your Dr.

Yes, use an spf on it and the rest of your lips. All skin is susceptible to UV damage and there are lots of decent products out there to provide spf protection.
I would also say go see your doc. Ten to one it's nothing, but better safe than sorry, you know? :)

I agree, anything new and dark like that should be checked by a doctor just incase. I had a tiny tiny dark mole appear on my foot and I told the doctor that I knew it wasn't always there and they removed it that day. It was nothing, but she was still concerned.

Sorry I don't know anything about UV lip balms.

Ooooooo I had one appear on my foot too, about 6 or so years ago. Its on the bottom of my foot, and originally I thought it was chocolate and tried to clean it off my foot  How big was yours? Mines also dark but flat, you really would think it was ink or something rather than a mole. x

Any new mole you should get checked out and I mean properly checked - not just some doctor looking at it with the naked eye because that tells you nothing. You need to see a dermatologist who will look at it under a dermoscope (I think that's the name) and 9/10 they can tell just from that if it's a threat or not.

I have two little moles on my feet that I never remember being there, got them checked and thankfully nothing but I still want them removed. When I wear flip flops you can see them - so yeah just for cosmetic reasons.

Get it checked!

This has made me nervous!! I'm covered in moles, mostly flat but I've got about 20 raised ones too. My GP says they don't do mole checks on the NHS :( I've got one on my thigh that has uneven edges (has for a few years) but my GP just says it's fine. There's a lot on my back I can't see too.....I wish I had money for a mole check!!!

Thats bizarre, they should check them surely? Maybe its because you have a few (so it will cost more)? I have a couple of raised ones, had em for years.

Do you think the mole on my foot is all right, since its been 6 years since it appeared?

Mine was like a pencil tip dot size. Very small but new and dark and in the top of a toe. You can still get skin cancer on the bottom of your foot. A dermatologist should check them. She removed one on my back that I didn't know about... It came back abnormal after testing but they said that's all I needed to do. I had a friend die of melanoma (before age 30) so now I'm more careful. Hers started on her scalp.

Definitely get it checked out, and definitely start using and SPF chapstick. They make quite a range of chapsticks that have UV blockers in them, so shouldn't be too hard to find a good one that you like. I use Berts Bees and a few other kinds with SPF in them.

Any new dark or red spot that just randomly shows up, and wasn't there before should always be checked out. Also, any pre-existing spots that suddenly change shape, color, or size.

I'd say a flat mole is ok, but then saying that I have about 30 moles on just 1 arm lol so I'm used to having so many and not really worrying. It's the larger raised ones that worry me.

Thanks to a pp who suggested a second opinion. I might try the other GP at my surgery, she is just as useless tbh if I generally say the right things though she'll refer me!! I just want them checked, esp the ones I can't see!!

I have lots of moles too. I do a 6 weekly check on them, I scan them over and watch for any change. That's all I can do!

So, Ive decided to go to the Drs about the mole on my foot (and will mention lip too). Theres a mole checker thing where a mole needs to be checked if its:
A - asymmetrical. Mine is. Its got 2 sticky out bits on 2 sides so its not a perfect circle
B - borders (uneven/irregular). Mine is irregular due to sticky out bits as above.
C - colour (different colours). Mine is uneven, darker in the middle and paler on the outside.
D - diameter (6mm or more). Mine is just over, 7-8mm depending on where I measure.
(Thought I would give the detail in case it helped someone else out:flower: )

I know based on the above I should get it checked, but will the Dr think Im daft, as I dont know when it changed in shape and colour? Im convinced its got bigger, but I dont know when, when I first had it it was like a dark brown smudge, like how it is in the middle.

Should I make an appointment (based on the above, but also as I dont know when the changes happened, maybe in the last 6 months). If yes, should I get a same day appointment (are these just for emergencies though?) or just wait a couple of weeks for an appointment booked in advance?

Sorry for all the questions x

Yes you should. Melanoma can look like a normal mole (though very rarely) but you need to make sure they look at it properly with a microscope thingy, they can't just tell from the naked eye. They may form a biopsy and send it off to the lab for further tests but if you feel anything us suspicious get it checked.

I'm not sure if you need an immediate appointment, maybe ask the receptionist or a nurse on the phone? Definitely go though and don't worry what any doctor thinks.
