Hi All
Just though I'd take this opportunity when my little lad Max sleeps to tell you about his birth story.

I was due 4th July 2009 and had planned on a water birth with as little medical intervention as possible. A physiological 3rd stage, no Vitamin K unless absolutely necessary etc.

On Friday 19th June I was up at 3am for the toilet and couldn't get back to sleep. I decided to finish ironing the babygrows etc that were piled up in the nursery. I finally got back into bed at 6am when OH was due to get up for work. I told him that all the ironing was done and I was now ready for Chip to arrive.

I got back out of bed at 6.15am for the toilet again and discovered my bloody show in my knickers. Told OH but packed him off to work as I knew that you could still have a few weeks to go after your plug comes out.

At 8am as I got up from the sofa I could feel that my knickers were a little wet. Thinking I must have leaked urine I changed but put a pad on just incase it happened again. Within 10 mins it happened again, this time enough to wet through my knickers, pad and pjyama bottoms.

I called the midwife and she told me to attend the day assessment unit at the maternity hospital so they could determined if it was urine or amniotic fluid. I called OH to come home from work and bizarrely decided I needed to make a pile of rolls to take to the hospital!!

We arrived at 8.45 and I had my first contraction, a very mild one, no worse than a Braxton Hicks. I was told to wait in the waiting room until they could see me. OH ran to the shop to get me some bottled water and I had another two contractions, more severe than the first and just 5 mins apart.

At 9.25 they took me into an examination room and I showed her my pad. This was tested and they advised that it was my amniotic fluid. I told her that my contractions had started and she said they'd give me half and hour to see how things progressed. If I had no more they would send me home for 48 hours to get labour started naturally.

I asked for pain relief at this point as pains were getting more severe and were still regular at 5mins. I took two paracetamol and they also let me have a warm bath.

The contractions were initially soothed by the bath water but after 30 mins they were 3mins apart and the pain was so bad I was in a sort of daze between them. I even tried to call my sister at this point, though I'm not sure I could have even spoken to her had she been at home! The midwife came in and asked me to return to the bed so she could examine me.
It took me 10 mins just to get out of the bath and OH dressed me (in the dress I had arrived at the hospital in, minus my bra, with my hair wet and all over the place!!).

When I got back to the bed, the curtain was drawn between my bed and the other bed in the room. I was very conscious that there were other people in the room and was doing my best to keep the noise down but it was so hard. I was on all fours on the bed and the midwife was there to examine me.

I eventually managed to get onto my back and she shocked me by saying 'Don't panic but your fully dilated'. She then rushed out of the room to get a wheelchair to take me to the maternity delivery unit. OH and I were just staring at each other in pure shock.

At 11.10, as I was being wheeled into the delivery suite I told them I wanted more pain relief and was told that it was far too late for that and this baby was on the way.

I managed to get out of the chair and OH removed my dress and knickers for me. I was given the gas and air mouthpiece and tried using it for my next contraction. For me, it didn't do anything, I think this may have been because I was scared of feeling woozy and didn't inhale hard enough. I had one further contraction standing, leaning over the bed before the urge to push overcame me.

Somehow OH and the midwife got me to get up onto the bed and the pushing commenced. At first I had shooting pains in my hips and thighs which were so bad when I pushed I had to fight the urge to just pretend.

After a few really strong contractions I finally got into the pushing rhythm. It took just 30 minutes of pushing and little Max entered into our world, instantly making all the pain worthwhile. He was two weeks early so weighed in at 6lbs12oz, covered in vernix and his back and arms are covered in his white downy hair. He is 44cms long and had 9/10 on the Apgar scale losing only 1 point for having purple hands and feet.

He was delivered straight onto my chest and was feeding within 10 mins.

I did suffer a small second degree tear which required stitching and this was done a few minutes later under a local anaesthetic.

I had initially though that I would spend at least the first night in hospital, just to ensure the breastfeeding was going OK and we were well rested. However, the post natal ward was very busy and I just wanted to be settled at home with our new son.

We were finally discharged, straight from the delivery room at 5pm.

Max has been a little star so far. Sleeping most of the time and feeding like a dream. I was concerned originally as my colostrum was minimal and he was so skinny. We seem to have overcome this on the advise of my lovely midwife Tina. I have been using nipple sheilds to feed him and occasionally OH will drip a syringe of Aptimil formula milk through the back of the sheild, whilst it is on my nipple to fill Max up. This has worked fantastically as his hunger has been satisfied, he has had colostrum and my breast have been stimulated into milk production. Fennel tea has also had a big part in the production of milk, I hate fennel but just two cups a day have made a world of difference.

I hope you all have pleasant birth experiences and share in the enormous joy in this experience has brough.

Max Fenton is simply amazing, OH is the best partner a girl could wish for. I'm so happy and so lucky to have these two special boys I can't even see my screen for tears now.

Best wishes and big lots of love to all you mams, dads and babies out there.
