We're Finally been Called up (IUI)....

Short history:
To those who don't know me/us, We're been TTC almost 4 years, i have a living son from taking angus castus.

In March 2009 after 1year 9months TTC i was dignosed with PCOS. We were refered to the infertility clinic.

In June 2009 we got our first appointment and had alot of tests where they found out i had sever PCOS and a backwards uterus and susupected Sperm allergy.

In September 2009 we were put on Clomid after OH's sperm came back above normal.

In Jan 2010 we got but sadly in Feb 2010 we found it it was suspected ectopic and pregnancy was terminated with methotrexate.

In June 2010 I had a lap and dye and found out i only had one tube so that was another problem

In August 2010 we were put on the IUI waiting list.

Recently i found out might have EDS type 3. so worried about that


Today: Today i phoned the infertility clinic and found out we are not at the top of the list for IUI OH to get another sperm test which will be done on 5th May after that we are ready to go for IUI

Anyways this post is because i would be grateful if anyone gone through an going through it what happens step by step after the Sperm test?

i sort of understand what is going to happen maybe lol but i am little new to IUI and our RE never told me anything

any information would be great thanks xx

For my IUIs I go in between CD1-3 for a baseline ultrasound scan to make sure there aren't any large cysts. I start meds on CD3 and go in for a follicle check scan the next week. If there is a follicle(s) large enough I take a trigger shot that night to force ovulation and have the IUI 36 hours later.

Some people have more follicle scans, but it depends on the situation. If you are using injectibles you will have more to monitor the effects of the meds. Some clinics also do one IUI at 24 hours after the trigger and a 2nd the next day.

When you go in for the IUI they will wash OH sample to get the best sperm and then use a catheter to deposit them into you. The experience of the IUI itself is a lot like a pap smear. I generally have some mild cramping after but everyone is different.

thank you soo much for replying, do you know if you are able to take pain meds before going for it? not ibprofen or anything.

sorry to be personal but how many days off of work etc have you had to take?

i knew what happened during IUI just not what people went through and how it took place step by step.

how often do they need to get sperm samples and how many days is there a no sex restriction? was your cycles medicated or not?

sorry alot of questions and unsure where to start lol

I have never taken pain meds but I believe you are not supposed to take NSAIDS like ibuprofin or Aleve. I think Tylenol is ok, but check with your Dr and they can say for sure.

I generally have 2 appts per cycle + the IUI. My work is very good about letting me have time for appts so I haven't officially taken time off for scans. Some of my appts have been on the weekends so it wasn't an issue. Others I try to schedule early or late in the day to minimize the impact to my work schedule. I do come home and nap after the IUI but you don't have to do so. There is no medical reason.

We were instructed to BD the night of the trigger (36 hours before IUI) and then again post-IUI. He shouldn't abstain more than 2-3 days or it can effect quality. He will give his sample the day of your IUI, they will prep it (takes about an hour) and then you have your IUI.

I have PCOS so my cycles were medicated to get me to ovulate with Clomid and/or Femara + a trigger shot. I haven't done full injectibles yet but there are many women on here that can share their experience with those if you go that route.

thank you hun i believe we're getting injectables and worried also because childcare of my son etc lol.... my OH hopefully will come with us but maybe not, the department were we're getting IUI done isn't opened on the weekends, its pretty far away from us over 20miles from us and i don't drive so gonna be hell travelling lol but will get there i guess just got to. i am worried also cause i have Sever PCOS and clomid bearly worked for us. plus your not meant to have more than 6 months of clomid before it becomes dangerous or so my RE told us so not sure if they are using it or not. what is the trigger shot like? trying to prepare myself for every little step thats going to happen.

Are you worried about care for your son for during the IUI? I wouldn't take him with you unless someone else is there too. My office has you lay flat for 10 minutes after and he could probably get into a lot of mischief in that 10 minutes

Regular clomid doesn't work for me either, but a combo of clomid and femara works great - I had 3 follies twice and am in the 2ww with 5 follies right now . I've heard that it isn't good to take clomid over 6 mths but my RE hasn't mentioned it and I know lots of women are on it a while. I think it thins the uterine lining, but I'm on estrogen and progesterone so that may combat those effects. Hopefully whatever they do will do the trick.

The trigger shot isn't bad. It is just like any other shot (trigger is just because it triggers ovulation, not that it is a different kind of shot). Most people take it in the bum but I do mine in the top of the thigh since DH is deployed and it is hard to do it in the bum on myself. It isn't a big deal to get the shot but I do find that the muscle at the injection site is sore and achey for the next 24 hours or so.

was just wondering how many days would need to get somone to look after him while went to appointments cause would want my OH with me, but i am not worried about it will be able to get someone to watch him either of hs granny's etc.... hopefully will get a 10min lie but doubt it tbh lol...

you have to do the trigger shot yourself?????

yup, he was here to give me the first shot but the other two I gave myself. It's not fun but you gotta do what you gotta do...

my RE needs to start learning how to talk she said unless we get injectables then i woldn't need to self inject i have a huge needle phobia been working on it for 4 years but still can deal better when told things not happy with her now. my OH wouldn't dream of injecting me so going to have to do it myself its worth it but still not fun. least got month to prepare really. got new job int tomorrow so going to focus on that for now lol

The dr office can probably do it depending on what time your IUI is.
