Curious because the last few months ds has barely touched his toys. He mostly reads or writes, does taekwon do and plays with lego. Im wondering if this is a phase or if he is just growing out of toys. He has a birthday soon, and im reluctant to buy the toys on his listbecause he doesnt play with them. I think he likes the idea of toys but is bored with them.

You haven't said how old he is?

My DS1 is 5 and he doesn't play with toys anymore. He likes things like riding his bike, jumping on the tramp, playing active games like tag and hide and seek. He likes doing 'projects' like building lego from instructions from scratch, rather than just free playing with lego. Other examples are that he got a little rock kit for Christmas that teaches about the properties of some rocks and he'll sit and investigate the ones that came in the box, he also got a robotic spider that he built, but he doesn't sit and play with toys like trucks or anything anymore. He also likes to do mazes and dot to dots and make paper aeroplanes, etc. I won't be buying him any toy type things for his next birthday, he prefers things that he has to use his brain for now.

That sounds alot like my ds. Sorry should have mentioned he is 7 in a few weeks.

Maria still plays with toys all the time at 7 but very often not the ones she's asked for for birthday/christmas. Maybe he's going through a phase? If he plays with Lego then maybe get more Lego for his birthday as a safe bet.

Thomas lost interest in toys quite some time ago, Sophie is very into toys though. I assumed it was due to his autism, as he has difficulties with role play/imaginary play.

We have loads of toys in our house for all different ages - my boys are 2, 4 and 6 - and they play with different ones at different times. Sometimes they go through phases of playing outside etc and then the toys are ignored. They’ll then randomly go back to the toys which I least expect them to. I would maybe buy one or two toys for his birthday but not lots

My 5 year old girl and 7 year old boy play with toys LOADS!! I was actually quite shocked to read this question!! They quite often get out their cars, their farm toys, their super heroes, or their paw patrol, I suppose that is 50% of the time, the other 50 is drawing, play dough, pretending to cook, etc, small amount of time on DS. I honestly am so surprised that some kids at this age don’t play with toys anymore!!

Ds will be 8 soon and has hardly gone near his toys in over a year - although I had put that down to us moving house and not having everything sorted out yet. He's not asked for any toys for his birthday - he wants a 'proper' tool box, a soldering iron and electronic tools. He spent last weekend learning how to solder!
