DH has 3% "normal" sperm. What are the options if we cannot get this number up? DH is NOT following the DR's order's to lose weight (see my journal). Is IUI an option???
i haven't any experience with IUI, although before we went for ivf/icsi, the clinic said we could try 3xIUI first - my DH's SA wasn't good at all, both morphology and motility. The odds are lower i think with IUI (than with IVF) and i couldnt bear the thought of 3 more possible BFN''s and then the wait of ivf, so we opted for ivf/icsi straight away. the FS at the clinic put us straight down for icsi due to DH's SA.
i;ve not caught up on your journal, but DH changed to decaff coffee, reduced alcohol and ciggies, and took wellman vits. His SA keeps getting better and better - almost 'normal' now (and that's since january i think). He still eats like a horse, has lots of unrefined carbs and loves his chocolate (and he's still a skinny bugger...)
sorry i might not be much help, but could sense your anxiety and wanted to share our experience
Could be wrong, but I thought that IUI was only a good option if the sperm was not a problem or if the problem was only a very minor one; that ICSI was the best option for male factor.

yes, that was what I was wondering too. I live in Canada, and an IUI can be up to $3000 a try, and IVF is about $8000 a try. Not very affordable. No coverage here (not even extended benefits) for anything fertility related.
Hi Jasmak - hope u dont mind me posting. Im just curious about something. You have 2 children already - are they ur OH's? (Sorry its a nosey Q) What i mean is, if they are, then was his sperm count once normal, and has that changed, or have u just been lucky with ur pregnancies?
Hope u dont mind my question, ive been following ur story when i see ur posts xx
Hi Jamak, from what I have recently learnt, ICSI is the optimal way to go for success if there is male factor. There is no harm in giving IUI a go if thats the way you want to go either. From what I know though, ICSI will be more successful.
The other day we had EC and collected 6 eggs. DH supplied his swimmers (which the SA said was on the low end of normal "but nothing to worry about"), but the scientist said half were sluggish or asleep and the other half were fast and furious. So she suggested ICSI as she was not confident in going IVF as we were previously going to be doing. So anyway...6 out of 6 fertilised via ICSI and FX still growing strong! The very experienced scientist said they should have suggested ICSI to begin with going from his SA.
Best of luck with your decision, I understand it would be a difficult one. Remember any plan is a good plan you both just got to work out whats right for you
