what are the rules on moving up a carseat again?

Just to throw this out there....

There is no law in sweden about rearfacing, they do it because they know its safer. Its very rare to see a child younger than 4 FF, and their child death rate in car crashes are almost 0.

(Im not saying if you FF you child will die if you crash before somebody makes it sound like thats what iv said.)

The same as it is not law in the UK... but many parents are making the choice to use ERF. However ERF car seats ARE hard to come across and there is no promotion of these seats. Mothercare & Halfords both told me ERF was "not possible". Until this site I had never heard of it.

One of the recommendations on the official site I linked to is that the UK need to increase the availability of those. Maybe then the UK can follow suit

why is it these threads always make me feel like an inferior mother who doesn't care about the safety of her child because i can't afford erf?

sweetie if you read my post it says that (imo anyway) that its about making the best choice you can for your LO with the resources you have, a good FF seat is not dangerous, yes ERF is safer, but your a good mom because you have a car seat, and your not making silly choices about it- the only mom who FF that i despise, has her 18 week old in a forward facing car seat because its "easier"- that is a silly choice, made by someone who should feel inferior x

Nobody has said FF is bad?

No, but when posts are made about how a country uses just ERF (out of choice of course, not law) and their child death rate in accidents in zero. It reads as a slight on FF seats, even when a line is added to say that it is not intended as one. :flower:

If the factual information about ERF had not already been shared, using an official site rather than opinion, there is really no need to add about numbers of deaths etc... in a country where it is not a legal requirement but everyone does it anyway.

It really hard to not see it as a statement to put down FF mothers.

I can see where SJ is coming from... and that's from the person who was sharing ERF info on this site from go xx

I've only heard of ERF in the last month or so, from this site, and from some of the ladies at my BFing group. We FF (but also BF :haha:), and have no plan of changing this. I know that it's slightly safer, but it would make travelling impossible. She hated the car until she was FF, and now she's fine.

Each to their own, eh?!

We will be doing ERF.
But ERF seats are cheaper and much easier to find here. It's not realistic for everyone - as long as your child is in a properly installed car seat that is appropriate for their age, height, weight, etc, then you are doing a good job.

When we bought our FF carseat, the man in the shop was very helpful. He said the 9 month and 9kg was the bare minimum. He asked if my LO could stand up and hold on to furniture without wobbling , falling over. He said if LO can do this then and is over 9 months and 9kg then it is safe for them to go FF as they should be strong enough in an accident , hope tht makes sense xx

I see you removed your line on me scare mongering? Not at all. It is fact, not opinion

Because of the very fact you DO care? You absolutely shouldn't feel bad, as you have no control over what you can and can't afford (don't I know this!!) but I know there are things that I do or don't do with Ruby that aren't the very best for whatever reason, and I feel a bit bad about those things, but if i was a mother who didn't care, then I wouldn't bat an eyelid.

That was meant to be a nice thing to say btw, hope it comes across as such!

Yeah I did. It was added to make light of the usual arguements the ERF threads end up in but when I came back in and read it back it looked like a dig. Hence removing it as that was not it's intent

Hi OP
It sounds like you have a big bubba like mine! We had to get her out the infant seat before 6mths as her head was above the top by a cm. And she is now over 26lbs at 8.5mths!

We also tried two second hand infant seats as they were slightly larger.

We bought a FF seat in the sales as we were so broke, but then my hubby got a new job with a welcome package so we bought an ERF. They are too expensive i agree.

I am sure that if they were the same price as other FF seats most people would buy one! It isnt fair:nope:

As well as Milton Keynes shop this place also sells them in the UK.

https://www.tmbdirect.co.uk/rear-facing-group-1-car-seats-427-c.asp

They are cheaper than getting from Sweden, etc. My pal also got one from the US by getting a friend to post over, which still worked out cheaper than buying from the UK stockists.

It depends on your budget what you do but if your bubba's head is above the seat then obviously you need to get a new seat.
