what are these sharp pains?

i know they are quite common but im just wondering what they actually are, last night i had sharp shooting pains right down low sort of around my pubic bone area. Their the sort of pains that make you jump or gasp when you get them lol. Anyone know what they actually are? X

i thought it was just babys head boucing around and putting on pressure down there
