What are you doing for daycare?

How many of you have already decided what you are doing for Daycare? Are you doing in-home or a facility?

We're lucky that one of DF's friends has a wife who runs a daycare out of her home. And it's Spanish-English bilingual, which is kind of cool...

I'm staying at home. With the cost of daycare, my whole paycheck from working would go towards it which defeats the purpose.

Same here. I don't make enough for it to be worth it. Luckily my husband works from home, so hopefully I can go back to work a few hours a day after 3 months or so, and he'll take care of the baby during that time. My job is very flexible, and it would help out financially.

I'm staying home. I make good money when working but I want to spend this time with my son. Plus I work a lot, including weekends. I want to hang with DH and my little man.

My 19 month old started daycare yesterday. I looked at about 20 different places until I found one I was happy to leave her in. Its a facility, I wouldn't trust a home daycare as I think it's less supervised than a facility. There was that UK woman who used the children for porn movies, and another that shook a 10 month old leaving him severely brain damaged. In a facility there are more people around so I think it's safer.

I am signing him up for nursery this week (!) DS1 went from 1 year doing a mixture of childminder and nursery, however, as I need to plan in advance I am just booking them both in for 4 days a week nursery from September next year. We don’t live near family. I will keep DS1 in nursery until school as I think it is a benefit, but if DS2 gets tired with 4 nursery days like DS1 did I may have to split the week with a childminder, we’ll see how we go, it’s easier to sort nurseries in advance and it is across the road lol. I've sorted the finances and it is do-able for us, DS1 gets his 15 free hours a week by the time I go back and will be in school the year later.

In the UK registered childminders are quite closely monitored and have a lot of admin and inspections, there was a case in a UK nursery of a woman doing similar to what you have just described so in all honesty whether they are with a childminder or in a nursery (or even family lets face it....) you are placing that trust in somebody else which can always be broken, so I wouldn't dismiss childminders on this reason, DS loves his childminder and he found the home environment much easier to adjust to when he went to childcare so young, of course you have to find the right person.

You are probably right. I had a live in nanny when I was young and loved her. It just depends on what you as a parent feel comfortable with. When I was looking at the daycares I wanted somewhere that wasnt isolated. For example where she is now there are glass windows on the doors so any parent walking through the corridor can look in. The playground can also be seen from a quiet street. I went to look at a home-ran day care and it was a house that no-one could see into so in my mind they could have done anything to my kid in there. I realise that not all of them are the same, i think I just got a bad impression.

It's a frightening thought when they are so vulnerable, I am beginning to relax a bit more now that DS is able to talk, it's hard to not get carried away with all the stories in the media but it obviously is a rare thing, I understand your reasoning though, makes sense!

Im planning on staying at home...at least until LO Is 2 xx

I mostly work at home as it is, so I'll be staying home, with help from DH and my parents so I can still get some stuff done. :)

I changed my work schedule so that I will be off Monday through Thursday. My OH is already off Friday night and Saturday (when I work) and is going to try to get Sunday off as well which will mean childcare won't be needed. On the off chance Sundays off won't work out, I plan to hire someone to come into my home to watch the baby on Sunday while I am sleeping. I feel much more comfortable with that than a daycare in a facility or someone else's home as I will be in the home and should the baby need me I am right there.

I'll be going back to work after our LO is a year old, and I have registered at the facility that is in the same building in which I work. In fact, it is about 12 steps away from my desk, and I love the staff there.

That's awesome!

Our baby will be looked after by either me or OH, just as our LO is too. My OH works away, 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off and I am freelance self employed, so when OH is at home I can make myself available for work :)

Child minders are very popular around near me as we live in quite a ruralish area. My village alone has atleast 7-10 childminders which is great as they all get together to do stuff :).... A lot of my friends use childminders and love them!

That is PERFECT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In Canada we get a year off ourselves...so once my baby turns one we will be sending them to the same daycare my daughter currently attends....it's run by my SISTER!!!! Yeah...I couldn't be luckier...she's run a daycare for years and she lives pretty close so my DD is there now and she gets to see her cousins every day....she see's her aunt and uncle....it's beyond amazing. I actually worry we're going to have issues transitioning to a "school" because she's been SO lucky being in such a home environment for her...hahahaha....

Aw, that's great! Mine will also be in a daycare run by someone I know. Gives you peace of mind. :)
