What bedding do you use to make a moses basket/cot?

Sorry if this seems like a really silly post, this is my first baby and we have yet to attend any antenatal classes so i really dont know the answer!
How do people make up moses baskets and cots?
We plan to sleep the baby in a moses basket when it is first born and then we planned on using a grow bag in the cot, as i assumed you could just use them on top of a cot matress and fitted sheet. But we where looking through things today and neiter of us really have any idea what to use in the moses basket - all we have is the fitted matress cover.
What blankets or bedding do you use and how do you make it?!
What worked well for anyone who has already had a baby?!

Well I have fitted moses basket sheets, then I was planning on either swaddling when baby is small, if he likes it, or using moses basket sized cellular blankets. I have no idea if this is right or wrong though so I'm very interested to see what the experienced mummys say!!!

we were told to use a sheet which is tucked in at the sides and base to prevent them from pulling it over their head. This is best to come up to their arm pits with their arms outside of the sheet. Over the sheet you use blankets (number dependent on temp required) The sheet should be down turned over the blankets and all tucked in under matress so they can't be all pulled up. If that makes any sense?

I brought some fitted cot sheets for the cot (just cheap ones you can buy in any store) and I used a cot sheet for the moses basket too when Holly was little. You can buy sheets for moses baskets for quite cheap. For over the top of baby, I used a knitted handmade blanket cuz if Holly got trapped, it had enough holes for her to breathe through - of course we tucked it in to prevent her from getting tangled up in it. When she hit 6 months, I brought a small baby quilt for her.

I set up the moses basket tonight, and it occured to me that I don't actually know that either

The mattress is plastic coated already, so I don't need to worry about getting a protector for it. I have put a sort of fleecy undersheet around the mattress, and then a cotton flat sheet on the top of that, making sure it's all tucked in around the mattress. I have added a light blanket, because it's already around 20c where I live, so anything more than that would probably be too much. You can buy room thermometers in the baby shops, or online, and I noticed the other day that on the back of Mothercare's bedding, they have a temperature guide that tells you what sort of bedding you need for what temperatures your baby is sleeping in.

I assume that's all the bedding I need, but I will be interested to see what other people say.

I had the same problem but mothercare sell a Moses basket Bundle, which consists of 2 Fitted sheets, 2 Flat sheets and 2 Cellular blankets. And it was only £19.95 - quite good considering i paid £12 for just 2 Mothercare fitted Cot sheets.

Is everyones moses baskets new? I have just been reading a website that says if its not you need to get a new matress for it because:

"It is recommended by the FSID that if the moses basket is not new - whether it is second hand or a hand me down from an older child - then it is safest to buy a new moses basket mattress. This is because bacteria on the mattress, (especially from baby spit up) can slightly raise the chances of cot death. At £10 to £20 for new moses basket mattresses, it is worth the extra expense. "

Is this true, even if its plastic coated?! Am curious as i have never heard that before.

,moses basket mattresses should be no more than £10

as for in the basket, would use a fitted sheet (asda have 2pks and if you buy 2 they are £6) then a flat sheet and if needed a cellular blanket, but considering you are due in summer you may only need a sheet or nothing at all, its also advisable to not use the lovely coverlets that come with them as they are too thick. when it comes to winter baby will be in a cot but then, i wouldnt use the sleeping bag in summer either xx

I heard it was good to buy a new mattress, but I thought it was just because it was worn from the previous baby I would have thought if the mattress is plastic coated, a simple wipe over with disinfectant would suffice.

Our moses basket is borrowed from a friend. Their baby is 9 months old now, and therefore too big for it, and we can't fit a full-sized cot into our house at the moment, and don't have the money to buy both a moses basket and a cot, so have just borrowed it. Because we intend to buy a full-size cotbed in a few months, we didn't want to waste money buying both sheets for the moses basket and the cot, so just bought the cotbed size. It means they're bigger, but I've just folded the flat sheets in half and tucked them around underneath the moses basket mattress.

for the moses basket put fitted sheet on the matress. swaddle the baby as they feel safer and tend to sleep better and depending how warm it is you could add extra blankets. basically keep them warm but dont let them overheat. use your common sense on this. as for the cot pretty much the same. if you are using a growbag depending on how warm its is as well you could use just this and add extra blankets if needed. just play it by ear you will soon get the hang of it. i have 2 children and 1 on the way and i'm still learning lol. good luck with your new arrival
