I would second what the PP said. You could get them to buy some classic books and then either write a message in them that bub can look back on for years to come or over on the martha stewart website they have these little book stickers that can be printed out and put on the inside cover of the books.
Otherwise maybe a special bauble for the tree or some other keepsake
