What colour eyes and hair is your baby likely to have?

What do you mean where? Ask any geneticist.

I didn't get my info from any old website on the internet. I studied some genetics at university.

I don't doubt it hun, i have been looking into it since i found out i was pregnant and i have looked into some pretty deep explanations of genetics and have never come across anyone say its all down to grandparents who determine the eye colour of our babies, alot of it can't be explained. :dohh:

My eyes are a mix of blue/green with hazel rings around the pupil. I also have brown hair.

My babys father has brown eyes and brown hair.

I imagine my child will have brown hair but not too sure on the eye colour. :flower:

We both have blue eyes so certain to have a blue eyed baby! My hair is dark brown and hubby is ginger so I'm assuming bubs will be ginger too!!

BOTH parents have to be carriers of the allele for red hair, not just one, so if you have red hair, it's because both of your parents are carriers of the allele, even if only one or neither parent is a red head.

My husband has brown eyes and I have blue; my mum has brown and dad has blue; his parents both have brown eyes. Our child has a 73% chance of having brown eyes. It doesn't just come down to whether both parents of the baby have one eye colour - brown is a dominant gene and blue is recessive, so it will also depend on YOUR parents' eye colours.

Blue (for eye colour) and ginger (for hair colour) are both recessive.

As for hair, it's an unknown really - could be anything. I am blonde and husband is dark brown; both my parents have black hair and both his parents have black hair!

By the way - this was not aimed at you Mrsraggle. I hadn't read your post when I typed mine!

we both have blue eyes so our daughter will def have blue eyes.. but as for hair... im blonde and oh is ginger so its anybodys guess!

The baby's eye colour will actually be defined by the grandparents eye colours - as you'll carry 2 genes, one from your mother and father and same for baby's father. Your eye colour will of course be your most dominant gene but it could go either way.

For me, I have blue eyes. I have 1 parent with blue eyes and 1 with green.
Hubby has brown eyes. He has 1 parent with brown eyes and the other green.

Chances are that our baby has a 2 in 4 chance of green eyes and 1 in 4 of blue or brown - even tho' me and hubby have blue and brown eyes, baby has more chance of green :winkwink:

Yes, this is right. Eye colour is determined by your genes, not what YOUR eye colour is, ie, of course you get your eye colour from your genetic make-up, but you carry two genes and together with your partner, 2 of yours and his 4 eye colour genes, will come together to make the eye colour of your baby, and the dominant gene of the 2 should be the colour eyes your baby gets. That's not explained how it is in my head, and it's so much easier when teaching kids about it!

Eye colour, hair colour, skin pigmentation and yada yada yada can ONLY be determined by genetics... by the chromosones we get from each parent. If you went down your entire ancestry to the year dot and knew everything about their genetic makeup, you'd have an exact knowledge of the probability of certain coloured eyes. My husband has brown/brown and I have brown/blue so Our baby has a more or less 3 in 4 chance of brown eyes.

I havent a clue what our colour hair/eyes our child will have. I get confused when trying to guess lol x

I have light brown hair, was mousy blonde when a child. I have blue grey eyes.
My partner has dark brown hair and blue green eyes.

My Parents
Mom - medium brown hair and blue grey eyes - Dad dark brown hair {white blonde when a child} and brown eyes.

OH Parents
MIL - Medium Brown Hair, Blue green eyes / FIL Dark brown hair brown eyes

I remember this from biology at school, apologies if its not right as it was a few years ago!!!
Brown eyes and brown hair are the two dominant genes, all other hair colours and eye colours are recessive, but that doesnt rule out you getting them.

So its not just grandparents that determine the eye colour, it is the parents too. I said in a few posts back that i read that you carry 2 types of gene colour per person so im glad thats correct.

Yes, and you get those 2 alleles from YOUR parents, hence it is your parents who determine what colour eyes your baby will have. Having a 1 in 4 chance of blue eyes, doesn't mean my baby won't have blue eyes, but it does mean that he/she has a much higher chance of brown eyes because of the gene alleles my husband and I picked up from our parents (ie brown/blue and brown/brown).

Thanks for clearing that up hun. Much appreciated x

My OH is of Indian origin and I myself have brown hair and brown eyes. So dark hair and dark eyes is pretty much a given for my LO xx

How lovely. My dad remarried after my mum and had a daughter - my half sister - and she takes a lot of her traits from her mum who is Jamaican. She has quite dark skin, despite being mixed race, although she does have facial expressions like my dad!

My dad then divorced her and remarried a Thai lady. They had a son who is now 10. She was very dark in many respects (hair, eyes etc) He has very very pale skin - you can just about see his Thai origins in his eyes etc, but his skin just looks tanned! He also has a blonde undertone to his hair. So interesting.

Hair and eye color come from your family aswell, not just the two of you. For instance, my DH has brown hair and brown eyes, I have blue eyes and blonde hair. My mom has green eyes, which will give us a possability with green eyes. We could also have hazel eyes too, which is really common amongst parents with blue eyes. You carry genes that you may not have yourself, but can pass them on to your child.

With our son, he has blue eyes and blonde hair. My dad is the same, my mom is green eyes blonde hair, and my DH's parents are brown/brown along with DH. I am curious to see what our next baby will look like.

But remember there are dominant and recessive genes. So when one parent has blue and one has brown, and both their parents have brown, there is no chance of blue eyes as brown is dominant and blue is recessive.

My husband and i both have dark brown hair. he has brown eyes and I have blue eyes. Our oldest has dark brown hair with brown eyes. My middle child has light brown hair with blue eyes and my youngest has light brown hair with brown eyes. So I'm thinking this one might have light brown eyes and (hopefully) blue eyes.

But remember there are dominant and recessive genes. So when one parent has blue and one has brown, and both their parents have brown, there is no chance of blue eyes as brown is dominant and blue is recessive.

There is still a chance, even with recessive genes!

As I said, my parents are blue/brown and my husband's parents are brown/brown, so our child has almost a 3 in 4 chance of brown eyes; however, it depends which genes have been passed on, as only 2 of the 4 can be passed on. My mum has brown eyes and dad has blue eyes; my mum's dad had blue and mum had brown and my dad's dad had brown and mum had blue. I had 50/50 chance of brown or blue and I got blue, despite brown being a dominant gene as I said on the previous page. While there is a much greater chance our baby will have brown eyes, there is still a chance of blue eyes, and because green and hazel are both variants of blue, the baby will also have a shot at that. If all of my baby's grandparents had brown eyes (ie all 4 of them) then no, there would be next to no chance of blue! But if all 4 of them had blue eyes, my baby would equally have no statistical chance of having brown eyes - it makes no difference that blue is a recessive gene if there are are no brown alleles to be picked up.

I've got brown eyes brown hair, but I've got a recessive blue gene for my eyes from my dad. My OH has blue eyes brown/blonde hair, so our baby could be brown or blue eyed and could have blonde or brown hair. My hair was blonde as a baby and got darker as I got older.
