what distance should toddler be able to walk?

I know your children are all a bit older but I feel a bit worried. The only walking my son does that doesn't include running away, lying down or being a the park is when he walks from the front door to our car. Maybe 15 steps. If he does that without lying down I'm impressed. Maybe I am expecting too little of him and should try getting him to walk more

I think it depends on the kid and what you get them used to. I don't have a car so we walk everywhere. LO1 will only get in the stroller because she like to go fast (I sprint) tough she'll get bored when I get tired. Most times we walk and she prefers it. LO1 can walk an hour or so easily without complaining, but then again my OH likes "training" her. She went cliff climbing with my OH over the hols and though she was tired at the end, she was ready for more after her nap.

My two have been completely different in terms of walking.

Joshua walked at around 14 months and that was it, he wasn't bothered by the pushchair. He wanted to walk everywhere. By 18months old, he was quite able to walk around the woods (around 2 miles route) and not be phased by it.

Jacob, walked about the same age but a total lazy little git. He would still use the pushchair now if given the choice.

We have spent the past year building up his stamina. As a family, we go on lots of walks/hikes so we have started on gentle short walks and built it up. He managed a 5 mile hike a couple of weeks ago (very steep in parts) & he did brilliantly. Started complaining about 0.5miles away from our house that his legs ached (understandable!) but didn't asked to be carried.

DD didn't start walking until 18 months. Now at 2.5 she can happily walk to school, but only 1 way, I have to take the double do she can sit down the other way. I'm trying to build up how far she can walk as she'll need to be walking full time once the new baby comes.

ETA - School is 0.8 miles each way. Would help if I included that lol.

I think maybe about half a mile, but he's nearly four. After that he says he can't walk and it hurts.

I got Jade into walking by not taking pram when I walked dog, then moved onto shops etc but I must admit I let her as she doesnt touch stuff and run off. My son was a nightmare!

My LO can walk to Home Bargains and back in our village which is 0.4m each way. She can often only manage half way home with a stop at the park so total capable amount of walking about 0.6/0.7m.

She's just coming up 21 months, and was walking at 10.5m.

I dont even let Ella attempt to walk if I am going somewhere. She walks what is probably the equivalent of 5 miles when we are at the park...
Im pretty sure she could walk the .5 miles to dds nursery and back, but Id rather not take forever!

Holly doesn't walk very far before she wants picking up. She used to love walking but has got really lazy and wants picking up all the time. She likes the idea of walking and will sometimes tell me to leave the puhchair at home, and then wants to be carried!

madison is the exact same!! used to walk everywere at one point and loved it at the moment will only walk if she likes the place.. i.e park she will run around for an hour lol and will walk to feed ducks etc.. wont walk when shopping though lol!!! :dohh:
drives me nuts and kills my back as she wants carrying as we dont take the pram anymore as she hasnt used it in forever!!
