On my "landlords" status he put something down and mentioned the yard and well as I grew up I always called it a garden and messing around I put "Yard? What are you american? It's a garden" we always mess around and such but this one guy decided to take it totally serious and make it seem like I'm stupid because I call the thing behind my house a garden.

To me a yard was/is something a child plays in at school and a garden is behind your house and loads of people are telling me my opinons are wrong.

But yeah just curious lol

Haha - I feel the exact same way you do! Yard i American to me, I called it a garden. x

I don't personally care, it's just his douchebag friend can't seem to understand that people call it different. All I did was explain I've never heard it used until I moved to Wales. *sighs* people...

Then I got curious as he says its a british term lol.

to me, a yard is an area behind the house that has no lawn etc.

A garden has grass and flower beds.

When I was little, we played in the yard which was the paved area. The grassy area was the garden. This was all pre american slang though so maybe your landlord is from my era ?

Garden, I have never once called my garden/drive/anything around my house a yard...I use that term for a concrete ground around a stable block

ETA: Having just seen the previous 2 posts, i would have perhaps called that a yard...But iv never been in the situation so i dont know haha

His take on it is that at the bottom there is no grass plants or whatever so it's a yard. To me it's behind the house and there is grass at the top its a garden lol. Either way guess whose going to buy plants to make it a garden lol

Where I'm from a garden has grass, a yard doesn't. I used to live in a house with only a yard, now I have a small yard and a garden.

Yep this is what I think of when I hear yard, kind of like what the Coronation Street back yards are like! A garden is what i've always called it xx

Well I'm not sure about the rest of the US, but here in Utah we call the space in front of the house the front yard and the space behind the house the back yard regardless of whether it has grass or not. And a garden is a little space where you either grow flowers or fruits and vegetables.

I have heard garden being a british term for yard.

I'm Canadian. I don't care what people call it, we all have different names.

I call my yard a yard where the kids play ect, I call my garden where I grow things a garden.

I'm not like your landlord, he seems ignorant. Sorry.

I'm like most others here I'd call it a yard if it's just paved or concrete and a garden if it's got grass :) If I had a back like you describe I'd be calling the grass part garden and the concrete part yard though maybe haha so confusing!!

If its concrete/paved I call it the back yard. If it has grass I call it the back garden. xxx

I agree :)

Like some others, to me a yard is a little area at the back of your house which is paved and usually has an entry (alley way) running along the back of your house.

A garden has grass.

I think it just depends where you come from, people say different things in different regions.

How i think of it too.

To me if you've got a small paved space and nothing else its a yard, like a previous poster said its like what they have on coronation street.

Anything else is a garden.

If you've got a paved area by the house and then grass I wouldn't call the paved area a yard - I'd say your garden has a patio.
