I'm American and like the other poster said, we said front yard and backyard. A garden is where you grow fruit/veg maybe flowers, but if you have flowers in your backyard it's still a backyard. I love cultural differences!
A yard is more a working place...like the builders yard...my dad had one for he logistics business to keep the vans on...and we had a yard dog...that lived there to protect it. Gardern is the green (well covered in weeds) thing at the back of the house.
I would say garden for the whole thing. DH (American) said that to him garden = somewhere to grow carrots etc. Lawn = grassed area. Or in general just yard.
