What is the most painful part of labour?

Huuuuuuge thanks ladies :flower:

You have really helped me know what to expect and put my mind at rest. I am sure it's very painful but it seems you just get through it as you have a lovely prize at the end :)

Congrats and well done to all of you!

xx

Worst bit is the head crowing, they dont call it the ring of fire for nothing! But it does only last a few seconds, it wont kill you ;) xxx

Ooh, I forgot, the examinatrions to check how dilated I was, that truly sucked :nope:

1. Most painful part was the contractions. I was induced after being two weeks overdue and they were brutal as hell.

2. I had an epidural but it didn't work, I still felt the pain & what was worse is the Midwives kept having to move me into different positions because the baby's heartbeat kept slowing down. The last thing I wanted to do when I was in extreme pain :(

worst part for me was when i had the urge to push really bad but was told not too, probably not the best person to ask about epidurals mine worked for an hour and then wore off down one side which resulted in excrutiating pain in my left hip whilst trying not to push yet. fortuniatly its rare that an epidural should fail and if it does its usually sorted though unfortuniatly mine wasnt, but will have one again next time if im in labour for a long time, just that hour of rest did me the world of good after already being in labour for 24 hours xxx

No epi but i did have a back to back labour and delivery. the contractions were intense and excruitating. the delivery wasnt pleasant but was more of a relief feeling.

For me it was the contractions/my waters bulgeing right up until the end!

And I didn't have an epi but I did have Pethidine and I'm def having it again :D Was amazing lol

Contractions hurt the most for me, I had diamorphine and I wouldn't have it again- I don't feel like it really helped much. I was in shock during my labour though, so I would suggest having some kind of relaxation techniques to help you.

i dont think it does much for the pain either but it helps you snooze during con tractions.

Internal examinations were the most painful bit for me - I will refuse them next time!

The contractions from 8-10cm were the most painful part of labour overall I think, I would advise doing all you can to conserve your energy before then so you can keep strong at that stage.

Wishing you luck and hoping it goes well for you! Every labour is different, not everyone finds it as painful as it's stereotyped to be. Just listen to your body and do what feels right, no one can know what's going on better than your body can and it WILL let you know what it needs.

xxx:hugs:

It seems everyone has a totally different experience. For me it was definitely the crowning and final push, it did hurt somewhat lol! My contractions were totally managable, and when I arrived at the hospital I was already fully dilated without even realising it. Because of this my only option was gas and air, which I ditched as it just made me talk rubbish and put me off concentrating. My contractions were totally crap though, I spent 5 hours pushing and was getting really fed up by the end. I was terrified of labour too, but found it was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. Good luck, you can do it! (and from what I've heard epis are fabulous!) x x

1. What was the most painful part of labour for you? (eg contractions, head crowning, other?)
Contractions by far. I was induced and ended up hyper stimulated so went from literally no contractions to suddenly having very VERY intense contractions every 2 minutes, lasting half a minute. They floored me. I imagine it's easier if you have a normal labour as the contractions build in intensity and so I'd imagine that makes them easier to bear. I have no grouds for comparison though.

2. If you had an epidural, did it work? Did it completely block the pain or could you still feel it?
I had an Epi at 4-5cm. Initially I could still feel some pain on my left side so they topped it up. Then I didn't feel a thing, except for the pressure of contractions, until I started pushing. I don't know if they turned the epi down or off by then but I did feel the sting and burn as he crowned and as I pushed him out. I felt myself tear a bit. It wasn't agony though. Kinda felt like a chinese burn in my lady bits. The pain was likely numbed a lot though from the epi. I felt every urge to push and delivered Fin with no assistance and only had 3 minor tears, needing a stitch each. Overall I'd say I had a very good epidural. No problems after etc.

In my journal, the second post is my birth stpry if you wanted to read more. The link to it is at the bottom of my signature xx

Hmm, honestly I had a really good labour that i look back on fondly. If i had to pick something I disliked it would be the contractions - but honestly, I kind of remember them being painful - but it's so hard to try to remember exactly how they felt! It really is, although I do remember the stinging/burning when his head was coming through  - that wasn't very nice, but honestly a few mins later and he was out - I have to say, that rush of relief when your LO is actually delivered is sooooooooooo euphoric you just forget everything

I didn't quite forget everything when baby came out and the euphoria came (I was still saying never again hah) but it certainly helped. Also feeling her head when she was part way out gave me motivation for the last few pushes so def ask to feel the head!

I had a c-section, not a normal birthing but I figured I'd still had my 2 cents!

1. What was the most painful part of labour for you? (eg contractions, head crowning, other?)
For me, the worst part of labor was being cut open and then them pushing down on my stomach to get LO out. Since he wasn't dropping, they had to like push him down, it was just absolutely awful. The thought makes me feel nauseous!

2. If you had an epidural, did it work? Did it completely block the pain or could you still feel it?
YES! Epidural = heaven. It completely blocked out the pain, I couldn't feel anything. And the worst part about having an epidural was the fact I had to have a catheter, that was definitely no fun, but worth not feeling the contractions/pain.

1. Contractions were the most painful part, I hated them- I went from not being in labour to having very intense contractions every 5 mins and within the hour at every couple mins- pushing was much more bareable in comparison.

2. Didn't have an epidural (my labour was only 4 hours) but I would have avoided it if possible. I am grateful I didn't get the chance to use pain relief other than gas and air (I wasn't in the hosp long enough and trust me I would have taken it lol) because I credit that with my quick labour- I kept moving around- the birth pool was AMAZING and as soon as I was in I didn't ask for anything else. I hated labour but now I look back on it fondly.

For me the worst part was being checked afterwards with my second and contractions with my first :)

I had an epidural with my first and it worked down one half
but not my right. it was still amazing though :)

Has to be the burning when the head comes out, Callums head seemed to take ages to come out properly too. Contractions are hard but Gas and Air definitely helped! I didn't have an epidural so can't help you there. Good luck with it hun :hugs: xx

The most painful for me was the head crowning & that was with G&A. But my contractions I had none & that was me going upto 9cm. I ended up with 2nd degree lacerations to my perineum & also teared at my labia so the recovery was also painful but the contractions weren't as bad as the head crowning imo

1. What was the most painful part of labour for you? (eg contractions, head crowning, other?)

Definitely contractions... It started in the front, peaked, and went my back. Some people say they can't feel the contraction anymore once it stops but i could still feel a dull pain in my back.

2. If you had an epidural, did it work? Did it completely block the pain or could you still feel it?

Yep, completely blocked the pain for me! I was dealing with the contractions until 9cm before getting the epidural because it was new years eve and they had to get called in. Once i got it though, i didn't feel a thing... not even pressure. Because of this i was pushing for 6 hours!
