What is the recommended dose of folic acid your doctor

he gave me a perscription of 400mg but i was already taking that, think u only take higher if there is a history of spina bifita in the family

Yer Ive always been told 400mg once your pregnant (and do you take 200mg whilst your TTC?)

I was just told to take a prenatal :p they didn't give me an actual "dose" that I should be taking.

Ohh, well i was told 800mcg to 1000mcg. I was taking 800mcg befor I became PG.
No bad history here.
Humm. Seems every doctor is different.

yeah 400 mg is the average so if your taking more it must be for some reason

i was given 1200mg ...lots. but apparently the body can lose it quickly. I dont think you can have too much.

I take 1000mg because I'm coeliac and have problems absorbing it. My doctor said it's usually 400mg though.

I just found this on a website:

"The question that remains is: Can you overdose on folic acid? Can taking a high dose of folic acid endanger your health? Well, first of all, the folic acid maximum dose has been established to be 1000 micrograms, though there have been no significant reports of folic acid overdose.

While this is true, excess folic acid (in the milligram levels) has been seen to mask symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency. Also, excessive amounts have been found to prevent action of some medications such as anti-epilepsy. These are some of the reasons why the upper limit of 1000 micrograms (1 milligram) has been set. However, if you accidentally take too many supplements in a day, you will not likely absorb higher than 1000 milligrams."

i take 5 mg, thats what my doctor recommends to all her patients. i took this as well with my son and we were both fine. :)
