Hi :)

Not planning on no2 yet lol but was just looking for advice,

I had an emergency c-section in September 2011 after being 8 days overdue, i was induced but due to babys position i needed a c-section.

Was just wondering if i would need to have a c-section again, as i really dont want one because when my baby was 2 weeks old i ended up back in hospital for 2 days due to an infection in my section wound- so really dont want one again.

If i didnt go naturally can they induce you or give you a sweep or do i need to go naturally. Cause i just know i wouldnt up end going into labour myself. I always knew with my first that i would go overdue and end up needing induced then needing a c-section and i was right lol.

Thanks

Depending on the circumstances, you could try and have a VBAC. If you're more comfortable with it though, doctors will generally recommend you have a ELCS.

Not all places push a repeat CS, you'll find its quite dependant on your area. There is a big push for VBAC if your pregnancy is uncomplicated as it is safer for mum and baby.

If you pop into the VBAC section at the top of the page hun you'll find lots of info and stats to help you come to some decisions when the time comes.

I was given info about birth after CS before I even left hospital after my EMCS!

I told my MW at booking I wanted to Homebirth and it was never an issue.

I know here where I live, it's EXTREMELY hard to find to a doctor who is willing to do a VBAC, I've actually looked into it even though I'm not considering having any children for like 5 years +. You've just got to make sure you find a good doctor who is willing to do as you ask. I've had a couple of friends IRL who had EMCS and tried VBAC and it failed. I've only known one person IRL who had a successful VBAC after CS.

you would need to check your local policy, but here vbac is encouraged. the risk with vbac is scar rupture, which is very serious, but extremely rare after just one c-section. currently, after more that one the advice is repeat c-section, but there is talk of that possibly changing.

however, induction is an issue. again, policies vary, but at my local hospital, if you go into labout naturally, great. if not, you can have a sweep, but you can't be induced using prostaglandins. if it's possible to do so, they will induce you by breaking your waters (need to be a bit dilated for that to be possible, though) and some doctors will use the oxytocin drip cautiously.

i also ended up back in hospital with an infection (intra-uterine, rather than wound, though) and am really hoping to avoid it if / when #2 comes along.

as the others said it depends on the area. in the uk they seem more in favor of a vbac than say the usa. they wont induce using the prostaglandins and may places dont like the drip either but its all down to hosptal policy

well my midwife who was actually very pro natural birth and VBAC told me i would not be allowed a home birth after Cesarean due to my health being so bad and my pre eclampsia and spd risk being really high with each pregnancy, i also had a hell of a time during pregnancy so yeah i was told it would be a hospital birth and most likely induction before 39 weeks due to what happened last time or another section
this is all hypothetical though since I do not want anymore children

I havent spoken to consultant yet but they have given me a leaflet about my options (ELCS or VBAC). They seem very pro vbac and say that 75% achieve VBAC which is very encouraging. They will induce you (added risks which they state) or you can opt to have a planned section if you dont go naturally which is what i will do. I was so worried about VBAC but after reading this leaflet im feeling so positive and think i will probably go for it with an ELCS as back up if i dont go naturally.

I just had a meeting at the hospital about birth options after a c section. In the UK they are pro vbac (vaginal birth after c section). There is a chance of the scar rupturing but it's very small. 1 in 200 will weaken but it's only 1 in 1000 of it rupturing but there are ways to help prevent that.

If you go overdue they will discuss options with you. With your permission they'll try a stretch and sweep (various times if need be), next they'll try and break your waters. The last option is small doses of the drip. If it takes too long then they will have to resort to another c section.

Apparently 70-80 % of women who previously had c sections will go on to have a natural birth the next time.

You should be invited to a similar meeting when you get pregnant. Xx

They most likely would do another cs. With ds, i was dialated, they broke my water to induce, but he still wasn't dropping. They did an emergency cs, and the cord was around his neck.

I already talked about v ac to my dc. Im in the us. The area i live in, my dc and hosp has no dcs that specialize in vbac, only in the hospitals an hour away from where we live. Too much risk if i go in labor and have problems with the uterine rupture. I had a baby over 9lbs, and could again!!!

So planned csect for us this time.

I think it will be alot easier as I wont have to go through the labor pain! I went in labor at 2am on a sat, and had the cs 11:15am on a sun! So 31 hrs! I also had excruitiating back labor from 10 days before delivering, and if it were to happen again, i would be scheduled right when they would come!

It's the healing part i'm scared of :/

I had my c-section a month ago, my son was 13 days overdue..I was told when i had my c-section id be allowed to try for a VBAC, but would probably risk having another c-section due to Sebastian getting stuck in my cervix.

In my honest opinion..I was so traumatised by this birth i dont think id have anymore kids

Buddysmom, that's so sad. Have you thought about have a de-brief at the hospital? I had one and it really helped me. :hugs: x
