I am just interested to know different peoples opinions on what they would do in different situations.

For example, your LO falls down the stairs (top to bottom) is obviously upset and crying but no obvious injuries. What would you do? (e.g. take them to hospital/keep them home etc)

And the same if your LO had a cold for a few days.

(all will be explained shortly)

x

If Grace fell all the way down the stairs but wasn't in any visible pain I would probably get her checked out anyway, just incase. As for the cold, there isn't really much a gp can give you if they have a cold. Obviously you can buy your own medicine for coughs etc and calpol. I took Grace to the doctors when she had a really bad cold but I took her because she also had conjunctivitus. They gave her eye drops but said all they can advise with a cold is to keep an eye on it and make an appointment if it gets really bad x

A cold wouldnt really bother me, not much can be done anyway, but falling down the stairs from top to bottom I would defo get my LO checked out at either my GP's practice nurse or A&E.

Mine have both fallen down the stairs and i would just stay at home unless they showed symtoms of being ill.
I know the questions the docs ask in A&E and all they do is send you home with a leaflet saying come back in if you see these signs.

As for a cold, carry on as normal, a doc can't do anything :)

For the stairs - def. get her check either way; we live right near our doc's so if i couldn't get an appointment there straight away, go to a and e, and keep an eye on her.
for a cold, i'd wait a few days, keep giving her plenty of fluids etc and see how she went. if it wasn't cleared up in a few days, i'd run her to the doc's, just for a check up. maddi's never really ill, so when she is, it's a bit of a shock

I think if she fell down the stairs I'd take her for a check-over just in case... But with colds there isn't anything they can do so just keep an eye on her temperature, keep her comfortable and lots of cuddles and lots of boogey wiping.

For stairs.. Elyse did fall down 6 stairs before, I made sure she was alright, she was upset and crying but didn't seem to be injured, I comforted her and kept her awake for awhile and monitored her really closely.. I probably held her for like 3 hours straight, fortunately my mum is a nurse and was home and she said she seemed fine but to watch. Within an hour she was crawling around and climbing and up to her usual naughtiness :)

Cold for a few days... unless she was realllyyy out of sorts, fever, not eating/drinking, etc I'd stay home also

Why I ask is Jacob fell down the stair the other day he cried for a bit and we had a cuddle and I gave him a kiss better and after a pack of chocolate button he was fine! But when I mentioned it to someone they were so shocked I didnt take him to A&E. I personally would never go to A&E for anything minor like that we always had cuts/bangs and scraps as kids and we were never taken so I get it from my mother I guess. She used to say that unless a bone was sticking out we didnt need to be there. I just think its wasting their and my time.

And the same when he had a cold the other week and had thrown up a few times I just kept him at home again with lots of cuddle dosed him up on calpol and just generally kept an eye on him. Everyday my OH mum would say 'you havent taken him to the doctors' and obviously I said 'no' to which she normally responds 'well you are brave'

I know everyone is different but these comments have really got to me! x

I would def get my 2 checked if they fell from top to bottom of stairs even if they seemed ok, and for a cold I take my two if they have had it for more than say a week x

my lo fell but not top to bottem say half way i always phone nhs direct just to be on safe side

The only reason i would go to A&E is because I have had a bad experience :(

When Dan was 4 he fell off a wall and bumped his head, he cried for a bit then all seemed fine, he was given a little treat and we kept an eye on him. 2 hours later we where walking home and i told him to press the button so we could cross the road and he asked me which one ?? I thought he was joking, when we got into the house he said he felt dizzy, I thought he was hungry and went to fetch something next thing I know he is asleep and couldnt be woke up :( eventually after a lot of poking and proding he woke and threw up everywhere, he continued to throw up for about 5-10mins within that time I had already put 2+2 together and was preparing to go to the hospital. Due to my own stupidy thinking oh it was just a little knock, he didnt even cry that much, my child had to spend 2 nights in hospital with a suspected fractured skull :((

Now if I even suspect any of my boys have bumped their head (even a little tap), I am sorry to say I am straight to A&E regardless of wasting their time or not, to me my children come first and I pay my taxes so if my children need seen by in A&E then so be it.

No offence to anyone this is just how I feel :)

I wouldn't have gone for either thing either. Now if I thought they had hit their head I might, depending on the fall. But if they seemed fine and no bumps, cuts anything we wouldn't go. We wouldn't go for a cold either, we don't go unless we HAVE to go.

I would definitely get the child seen if he fell from the top/bottom of stairs. My little girl fell from her cot last year and took a turn and turned blue and that was a minimal fall compared to falling down stairs.

I rang 999 obiously and she was taken to hospital even though she was perfectly fine when the ambulance men come.

To be perfectly honest you doing this are really opening yourself up to trouble.

Say for instance, your child falls again; bangs their head and you do nothing then a couple of days later (exactly like Sabby said) something goes wrong with him. You go to hospital and tell the story. In this day and age, they'll wonder why you didn't bring him days earlier; that perhaps you were the cause of the injury and they could get SS involved.

All very dramatic you might think but it could happen.

A childs safety at all times, so most certainly a fall that height; A&E.

^^ that's one of the reasons why I would go. I would be scared that if something did end up happening to her because of a fall and I didn't take her in sooner SS might get involved and I never want them within a million miles of me and Grace! Maybe I'm just over paranoid though. Although with little things like bumps and bangs and grazes I don't even make a fuss because I don't want her to be one of those kids that cries everytime they hurt themselves lol

I wouldnt take her to a&e or anything unless she was sleepy or not herself afterwards

I would take AJ to A&E if he fell down the stairs.
To check him over and also for the reasons above that Mamafy stated.

I'd also get AJ checked out if he had a cold with other symptoms that I was concerned over. I did this New Years Day at A&E, he'd been ill a few days and then I couldnt get his temp down, very sleepy, not eating/drinking/peeing. It wasnt a waited trip, very reasurring and turned out AJ had a bad viral infection - good advice for Mummy and Daddy and a teddy for AJ! :)

Get them checked over if theyve fallen down the stairs

If she seemed fine in and of herself I'd keep her at home and just keep an eye on her. but I guess a lot of it would depend on how she'd fallen, how hard etc. and whether or not it was on her head.

And the same if your LO had a cold for a few days.

I wouldn't bother going in unless I felt I really needed to. For example over Christmas she was sick and we did finally have to take her in because we were fairly certain she had an infection (and she did-we had the flu) and just the way she was acting, you could just tell that something was seriously not right. For a minor cold I see no reason to take her in, not like the doctor will do anything for her anyways

I would take tyler to the doctors to get checked out, tyler fell off the settee once (not the same as falling down the stairs i know) but i took him up just to be sure. I wouldn't take him to a&e unless i thought it was absolutley nessersery (sp)

With a cold i would just keep him in doors and dose him up, i wouldnt go to the doctors for that.

I would get him checked out at the doc if he fell down the stairs top to bottom. If it was a cold or a flu I would watch his temp, breathing, wet nappies and make an appt based on those things. :hugs:
