''whats a christening?''

How on earth do you explain this one to a 4yo?!

I have no interest in god, or church and have never even mentioned to my son about any of these things.

His wee cousin is getting christened at the end of the month and he is invited but how on earth do I explain what it is and why??

I have got as far as 'its in a church' 'a man called a minister will talk to everyone and bless the baby' 'theres usually a wee party after it''

I got a million why's, what for's and the likes. I have noo idea how to explain it any better!

I am humanist so I don't believe in any of it, but if I needed to explain to Izzy I will try like this (probably will at some point eh!?)

I would explain the church is where people go for support etc from others and that the christening is their way of welcoming the baby/child to their group, then there is a party afterwards to celebrate the new member.

I dunno if that would work for you, but it seems simple enough for a child to understand?

i just told my sister (who is 4y/o) that the baby was being bathed in special water because his mummy and daddy believe in god and want him to be blessed by the special water so he will be a good boy lol simplist i could go about it lol
