When did all your LOs start to replace their own dummy during the night?

My LO still can't manage. She uses a mam dummy which doesn't have a handle and so she grabs the side and always puts the wrong side to her mouth. I've tried to give her a cherry drop 6 month + dummy with a handle but she's not keen. I'm having to get up to replace dummy hourly from about 3am on a goodnight and 11pm onwards on a bad night.

I'm considering going cold turkey and giving it up but she has started to self settle to sleep with it and it's a godsend in the car so I'm not sure. Have I got much longer to wait before she will be able to replace it herself?xx

Stalking. My lo's are the same, but I have the cot right beside me so it isn't too bad. I am not definitely not brave enough to go cold turkey!

My older boy was like this still at 6/7 month so we decided to go cold turkey so he learnt to self settle without dummys etc. I do no some of my friends los that could put it in themselves from about 5 month though so i think it depends on the child.

How awful was going cold turkey?

Cold turkey on the dummy (substituted by lots of holding and rocking) took exactly 2 days and it was as if it was never there. Did it at 9 months and wish I did it at 6 months.

My eldest never managed it before we rid the dummy, he was about 6/7 months and got rid of it for that reason. My youngest is pretty good and can do it most of the time

I think with DD it was about 7 or 8 months. I put loads of dummies in her cot so she could always find one in the night.

The dummy became problem around 3 months when I kept having to replace it every few hours. No one was getting any sleep:wacko:.

I decided to ditch the dummy at naps and bedtime. At first I tried to soothe him without and replaced it with patting. He would still cry and it took longer to settle him. About 2-3 days later it worked and we started on sleep training.

My LO is still learning to. My eldest could do it by this point. Fortunately she doesn't wake often for it, usually once, around 5am.
With my eldest he was waking more than hourly for his around 4/5 months, we tried to go cold turkey and he screamed so much the first night even with me comforting him So I gave in, the next night he slept 12 hours straight lol and soon after he figured it out himself x

Alex was able to at 4 months, I was quite lucky with that. I use the glow in the dark ones at night to help him find them.

I might try putting a few in the cot and see how she goes. She can find it but as it doesn't have a handle she grabs the side and then puts the wrong side into her mouth. Also, she's still using the 0-6 months dummies and doesn't seem very keen to switch! Do I have to switch her onto 6 month plus ones?

She does seem to be taking a particular interest in her dummy at the moment though. I keep finding her studying it in her pram or jumperoo so I think she's trying to figure it out. Hopefully it won't be long as the idea of going cold turkey does not appeal to me lol xx

My LO has just started this week. I just let him play about during the day with it (I don't normally give it to him during the day, just for naps and night). It's taken him a little while and he still gets it the wrong was round often (he has mam ones which don't have a 'handle' on as such) but he keeps trying until it goes in the right way. It's quite amazing watching him do it at night with his eyes shut and then watching him go straight back to sleep lol

His sleep has also dramatically improved (she says not doubt cursing it!). I actually had to get him up at 945 this morning (he went to bed at 7pm and has a feed at 6am) lol x

Oh, and I did give him the larger dummy's, he was too keen at first, but they definitely stay in better and now he rejects the smaller ones, I just put a few scattered around to his sides each night x

We got my son sleepy tot to attach to his dummy at about 5months one of the best baby things we have bought, didn't take him long to workout how to put it back in himself. We tried cold turkey at about 6 months was a disaster but we finally got rid at 18 mths and it was a breeze. Lo still has his sleepy tot in bed minus dummy!

I considered getting a sleepy tot but wondered if it was a gimmick! Might give it a go. How did you get LO to take to it? Xx

We just gave it to him, we still had to get up initially to give it back to him but I would say within a week he worked it out, he would just find it in the bed and pop it in. I was sceptical that it would actually work but it did, and it meant when we finally got rid of the dummy dh still had a wee comforter that he was used to. Would highly recommend
