When do fears due to active imagination start to develop?

I can't remember exactly when it started but in the past month or so (she's 2y11m) DD1 has had definite nightmares that have caused her to wake in the night and she's developed a fear of the dark. She says her room is 'too batty' when it's dark bless her!
