When are you suppose to start counting kicks?

My lo is usually a time, but has many quiet days and times when I eat a snack and drink juice and he doesn't move still. Then other times he is crazy. Hubby says I over worry, which I know, but just want to know when to start counting kicks and how many there are suppose to be. If I remember correctly, I believe it is 6 every hour, but not positive.

Thanks ladies!!

its 10 in a two hour span but normally my baby girl kicks that many times in mere minutes. i count them already at my own discretion but im sure the ob will assure you based on your health history and pregnancy history when to start counting. for normal healthy pregnancies i believe it begins in 3rd tri but for high risk its at 25 weeks maybe. this is my first baby and ive felt her moving since week 12 so whenever her pattern changes im on it! im a worrywart even though i dont need to be ~ ill count her movements once a week(basically when i think shes changing patterns). its fine to start later though! overall its recommended late 2nd tri and beginning of 3rd tri

My doctor said 6 every two hours is normal. But not until third trimester do they even consider counting. Don't listen to people who tell you they feel the baby all the time blah blah blah because its just nerve racking to compare yourself to those people. 6 in 2 is normal. Try to relax. When they go through growth spurts they have lazy days. They also change positions and face your back where you can't feel the kicks as much. I have days where I can see my baby move in my stomach and other days I have to concentrate on feeling him it's so light.

Also! There's no evidence that counting kicks indicates health of bub. I would only worry if you go long periods without feeling bub at all.

What counts as one kick?
I feel some movement that still feels like butterflies and some that are definate little kicks and punches! I also feel pressure on my bladder - it doesn't feel like a kick more like baby has lent against it and I instantly need to pee!! Do each of these count as one? Sometimes I feel a series of 2-3 kicks in the same place/at the same time, is that 1 for the purpose of counting or 2-3? Also some days like over christmas where i was really busy i only felt kicks/pressure once or twice during the day? Xx

They say 6 separate kicks. I count ones close together as separate ones. Sometimes I feel good kicks. Weak kicks. Rolls. Hands rubbing along the walls. It all counts as movement :)

Actually counting kicks is outdated. You just need to recognise ANY change in usual movement. Anything different to what baby usually does should be checked out. I'd say as soon as your feeling regular movement it's wise to keep a check on it. Intuition is usually right so anything you're not comfortable with, then call the Midwife.

Exactly! This lady knows what's up.

Thanks ladies! This makes me feel more relaxed. He just isn't as active as dd was, it is hard not to compare though I know all babies are different!

Any movement counts. Even hiccups, apparently.

I still haven't been instructed to count movement. My midwife just asked if I'm feeling it consistently. Once you learn your baby's patterns, make sure to pay attention and you'll notice if something is off. Keep in mind that growth spurts and baby position can make a big difference in what you feel. My guy has quiet days if I'm up and doing a lot, too - I think he just gets rocked to sleep when I move around. Pay attention to what gets the baby moving, too, so if you're ever concerned you know what to try - I know the advice to lie down is typical, but I feel my guy most when I'm sitting back on the couch.

Me too!! Im at work all day on my feet and when I sit down to eat lunch I feel lil man but not until I'm home, from like 6p-8p, do I feel a ton of movement! And it's always when I'm sitting back on the couch or laying down on the couch. Also, Im on a low sugar diet, so when I do eat sugar ( like milk duds at the movies the other night) baby goes crazy!! Such a inexplicable feeling! :happydance:

My ob with my dd never told me I had to kick count. She would ask at every appointment if I'm feeling movements. But she did do a u/s at every appointment anyway.
