so i know the WHO says 6 months. I had envisaged starting at 5.5 months so that by the time LO needs the nutrients from solids at 6 months he's already able to feed well.

Anyway, he's 5 months next week and has been waking lots lately in the night and feeding like a trooper (I swear he feeds more at night than during the day) so both my mum and MIL have suggested he start solids now. I think in their day babies started solids much earlier and they feel he must be ready now.
But I feel we should wait.
Or am i just being stubborn?
He watches us eat and I've even caught him doing chewing motions with his mouth.

WE go away next weekend so i thoguht it'd be sensible to start after then...but is that me just being selfish and delaying it as it's easier for ME?

cripes...

a pointless thread, just wanted to share my frustrations..

do you give him anything other then milk? what kind of solids are you referrin to?

I've seen a handful of babies start a little early (over 5 months though) when I worked in childcare. I've also seen children as old as 8 months who were just not quite ready.

I dont see a significant issue with it, you'll know if your baby is ready. Also, consider consulting the babies doctor or the health care clinic, to work out the best way to approach solids for your individual little man.

paediatrician has advised us to start on puréed veges and fruit and not baby rice or cereal.
may try few spoons of carrot n boobie milk purée today. start him slowly.

Just wondering if there is any particular reason for starting on veg/ fruit and not baby rice? (As I'll probably be starting soon too.) Thanks

ya, im wondering too cause usually you start with rusks, rice cereal etc to prepare you babies stomach for solds.... And you can start those at 3-4 months.

fruits and veggies etc may cause horrible diahreah...

my paediatrician recomended it. She said to leave rice until about 8 months. I think it's to do with gluten and links with allergies if given too early. She hates rice in milk in bottles too - I suppose she prefers to teach baby about spoons and feeding. She told me she prefers to start them on fruit and vegetables and rusks not until 6 months.

i get the impression these first foods are about learning - tastes textures (gooey,...slightly less gooey?! lol), as well as vitamins, as opposed to just filling baby up.

Maybe?

so far for my LO it's a yes to apple and a maybe to carrot :-)

Hannah's had both oatmeal and rice and been fine with them. Though she much prefers the oatmeal to the rice. We tried sweet potatoes last night and she was pretty iffy on them

I started Sam on veg too - as long as you're not starting too early it doesn't matter what you start with (within reason, obviously - and something that doesn't have a strong taste). I think baby rice is often a good first food as you can mix it with their normal milk so the taste isn't too much of a shock to them (but it does taste horrible!)

And I'd start when you want to - if you're going away it makes sense to leave it until you get back x
