I know the guidelines (for the uk at least) say baby should nap with you in the same room until thu are 6 months old.

However - ds has pretty much slept for two weeks since he was born & has just realised he's arrived!!! There are several times in the day when he's clearly trying to sleep - but me, oh & ds are being too noisy. And when he can't sleep he's then getting pretty upset. & by being noisy - oh & I are just talking... Dd on the other hand is being a typical 4 year old

So - do I let him go upstairs for a nap - check on him frequently & use the monitor? Or do I just wait for him to get used to our noise & keep him with us?

What does everyone else do before 6 months??

My youngest napped in her buggy and I just wheeled her into the hall. Only in the last week has she been napping in her cot (and sleeps so much longer!) but that it because she would only settle in her buggy before.

I maybe wouldnt put a baby that young in their room, but I have never used a monitor or anything so maybe that would be okay. I guess it is what you are comfortable to do, and what works for your family :)

Our lo is just the same. He has been sleeping on me mostly, lol, but when he has been put down it has been in carrycot in living room and we have gone into the dining room and done puzzles or drawing with the others. We use a video monitor so I can keep an eye on him but as long as they are in a safe place (carrycot/crib) and you are within earshot (like the next room) then I think your ok. I wouldn't be without a video monitor now though, as much for making sure that the older kids don't go into him while he sleeps.

When DS2 was that young he either slept in the room with us and we put white noise on or got him to sleep in his pram and wheeled him into the kitchen while the dishwasher and washing machine were on! Now he's a bit older he naps in his cot upstairs and definitely sleeps better and longer without DS1 playing trains over him :haha:

From birth to roughly 2 months I'd take his moses basket downstairs and have him nap in the same room as me. After that, he spent a lot of time napping upstairs in his basket or in his pushchair. Now he naps and sleeps in his cot if we're at home.

99% of her naps are in her crib and have been since birth :)

My little refluxer won't sleep for very long and needs me to supervise and have him on me, but if I had a regular napping baby Is have no problem letting him nap in another room and popping in every few minutes while I did some cleaning or whatever. I'd even be happy putting him in his cot with the video monitor on

I hadn't heard those guidelines (but I'm in the US). Early on DS slept in a pack & play in our room but it had one of those removable bassinet things that we would bring into the living room during the day where he would nap. Sometimes he'd nap in his swing and we went through a phase where we just gave in and held him bc that was the only way he'd nap. Now that he's almost 5 months he's been taking naps in his crib in his room (with video monitor on) for about a month.

Do what YOU think is best! Dont worry about what they recommend or what they say you should not do. This is your child. If you feel safe with him sleeping in another room then do it. He will sleep so much better in a dark, quiet place.:flower: Thats what baby monitors are for :hugs:

My first I always had him napping in the same room as me. This time around I think baby is going to have to have some naps up in the bedroom whilst I'm downstairs with my noisy, boisterous 3 year old.

Till 3 months DD slept on me for naps only, but after that I sleep trained her (not CIO the shh/pat method) and since then she sleeps in her cot!

My lo napped in his moses basket in living room or pram until he outgrew it and then his cot in his bedroom.
It's good for them to get used to sleeping where it's noisy so they can sleep anywhere 😃

Ive tried to get my babies to nap in their cribs but when until about 5 months typically they napped on me in the carrier or in the swing. With DS2 we put the swing into the bedroom so he would nap there without being disturbed. Personally I wouldn't worry about them napping in a room by themselves and would get the baby to nap wherever works best!

DD naps in the swing in the living room with us. She is impervious to my 2 year old screaming at the top of his lungs, and sleeps better with some noise like the TV or music. She sleeps at night in the big bed with me.

She napped in her bouncy chair at first, but now she mostly naps in her pram. The pram is usually in the kitchen, because that's where we have the most space. Sometimes she sleeps in her crib upstairs.

Thanks everyone  it's good to know what everyone else is up to.

I put him in the cot today (checked on him about every 30 seconds!!) & he slept brilliantly for 45 minutes. Then I had to get him up for dd's play date - he grizzled all the way through it & startled every time there was shouting - which was a lot with two girls & a boy running riot in a sunny back garden!! He was a grumpy bubba!!

I might just try to mix it up - try to let him get some sleep but also take him around noise & hope he gets used to it.
