Hi Ladies,

I will be formula feeding my baby but which one to use?

I am going to the shops tomorrow and decided I should probably buy a tub ready for when baby arrives but there are so many different ones, does it make a difference?

I have seen things like, SMA, Cow and Gate, Aptamil, Farleys, Supermarkets own brands?
I am so confused, hope you can help :) xx

I started Phoebe off on SMA but she was very sicky on it so the HV suggested changing her to Cow & Gate and she was fine after that. She stayed on it until she was a year old. I think it depends on individual babies and what suits them. Just buy the one tub and if your LO is ok on it you can then carry on.

My HV implied that I should steer clear of SMA as it can apparently cause constipation. I've heard that aptamil is good and that C&G is made by the same people but cheaper don't know if it's the same milk though?

ive heard all the SMA things too, but i put harriet onto SMA because thats what i had, and my nephew who is a year older than harriet had it too.
She was fine... got a bit of colic but i dont think thats down to the formula.

its up to u, there is no right or wrong.

C&G or Aptamil are the most popular ones, I'd steer clear of the others as they can be more prone to problems (SMA) and any others tend only to be stocked by certain shops.

We use cow & gate.

we used aptimil when i switched from breast milk, as it is apparently the closest to BM.. Rubys never had any issue with it, and it works well for us! we started with first stage, and have now moved to toddler follow on

Another vote for Aptamil. We changed formula 4 times until we settled with Aptamil

I vote Aptamil too.
My lo started on SMA and was very sick on it.
Aptamil is the most like breast milk and even making the bottles I could tell it was lighter, put her onto that.
Never looked back :)

We use Aptamil here aswell! I've been told by a number of people It's easiest for babies to digest and very gentle on their little tummies!x

I combination feed and use Aptamil:) She goes from breast to bottle since she was 3 weeks old with no problems at all! So can't be that different?

Aptamil for me! We swear by it - but like a lot of things its whatever works best for your baby. x

We started on aptamil, and went on to try all the different ones (hungry baby and comfort) but after 6 weeks of projectile vomitting, we changed to sma first and have been on that for nearly 6 weeks and i can honestly say so far so good hth xxxxxxx

every baby is different so i personally wouldnt stock up on a particular brand tbh....decide on a formula and give that in the hospital and if they are settled on that particular formula buy some cartons for when you get home and if they stay contented then they'll probably be fine but I was giving my little girl Aptamil for 2 weeks without problems and then she became very un-settled and constipated pretty much overnight so i switched her to Hipp Organic and she went back to being contented again so it may take a few weeks before you know if the formula you choose suits your baby....

We used SMA for Amy, but will probably chose a different brand for our next one. SMA made Amy pretty windy but she settled down with it after a few months. She's still on SMA now and gets on well with it :)

i use sma cus my mum used it with me and my sisters, not had a problem with it and will use it again i dont like cow and gate just cus its cheaper and im a snob

Thanks to everyone who replied, I have decided to go with Cow and Gate! If that doesnt suit then I will change to aptamil, will be steering clear of SMA tho, thanks again :) xx

I use cow&gate, if you look at the ingredients at the back they are identical to Aptimal (also made in the same factory) Its cheaper and I found it better than SMA (which I used for my ds).

However you might have to test a few out before you get the one thats right for baby.x.

i used SMA with my DD and she never had any problems, never sick or windy etc... bought SMA this time too for my DS,. so far so good... xx

Whats right for one baby isnt right for another so dont stock up on one brand. Try one, and go with the flow after that. You may find you need to change it as it may not suit your baby. I started LO on cow and gate but found it wasnt filling her so put her on Cow and Gate comfort as its thicker and shes fine now.
