Is there any way to get rid of this??

Midwife says it's residue from milk... but it looks quite thick and others have said their babies didn't get it...

That mite actually be thrush. Brandon had it at about 2 weeks old! A way to check is, rub your finger along their tongue and if the white stuff doesnt come off then it is thrush!

Its nothing to worry about, treated with some medicine and is gone within a few weeks! x x x

That sounds like Oral Thrush, i would make an appt to see GP and they will give your LO a diagnosis.

Its very easy to clear up.

:hugs:

I agree I'd have LO checked for thrush

Matthew sometimes has this though its just milk i give him boiled water sometimes between feeds and it washes his wee tongue clean

Emilie has this too & the HV said its from the milk

My LO gets it from the milk too.

My HV said thrush is on the side of the mouth too but if its just a white tongue then its from the milk.

Sounds like it might be oral thrush to me hon,Ophelia got it a couple of times when she was little and only got it on her tongue, not the sides of her mouth.

You should be able to get it sorted quite quickly with a trip to the GP xxx

Thanks all, I tried some cooled boiled water before and after feeds and it's made no difference. Off to the docs tomorrow then to get it diagnosed and sorted out.

Thanks again everyone x

my health visitors and midwife repeatedly told me the white coating on Ellis's tongue was milk, this went on for 6 weeks until it became obvious with her feeding that there was more to it and it turned out she did have thrush. I'd asked again and again if it was thrush and was told no,so get along to your gp asap. I was bf so it could have had implications there but i was very lucky and didn't get it. The treatment is straightforward and you'll find it'll clear up in a week or so

I just rememberd that my HV said it has to go away after a feed just on the tongue otherwise it could be the beginning of thrush.

Hope the docs sort it for you :flower:

it's milk resedue. just clean his tongue with a soft cloth & water once a day, and the residue will stop as he grows older. thrush is on the side of the mouth & babies usually refuse the bottle if they have it :)

Yep if its on the tongue its from milk hun , oral thrush is spotty & would be on the inside of cheeks , back of throat etc not just on the tongue. It can happen with breastfeeding too but just doesn't look as thick as a ff tongue xx

With Brandons thrush it was only on his tongue to begin with...it was only once we started the medicine that it spread to his cheeks etc. I would just go to the docs to get it checked out. x x x

Evie has this too, and I asked the doctor about it and she said it was from the milk. We took Evie to the hospital over the weekend for something unrelated and the doctor there saw it and didnt comment on it so I'm assuming it's nothing to worry about. She doesnt have any trouble feeding - far from it lol! My first daughter had it too and it went away eventually :)

Evan had a white tongue, and MW and doc checked for thrush, they said it was just milk. It stopped after about 10 weeks.

if it wipes off then it is probably milk residue but if not then it's possible it's thrush. i disagree that it's easy to get rid of though ... it's actually pretty stubborn! fortunately, it shouldn't bother your LO too much. my DD had thrush and it took 3 rounds of meds (about 2 months) to finally get rid of it!

My HV said thrush is on the side of the mouth too but if its just a white tongue then its from the milk.
my DD actually only had it on her tongue - not on her cheeks or throat - and it was thrush

if you can't wipe it off and i would ask the doc ... you'll likely have to buy new nipples for your bottles (and pacifiers) too as it sticks to EVERYTHING

Because Max is quite sickly is tongue was always white and the HV kept saying it was thrush, yet every time we went to the GP he said it wasn't thrush and we'd know about it if it was.... well lo and behold, couple of months later... he has thrush and you really can tell. His tongue isn't a smooth white colour, it's red with big white speckles. He's also got big lumps of white along his lips and inside of his cheeks. They came later on though. He's on nystatin now which is gradually clearing it up, but it did get really red and sore at one point! Not nice!

Thank you everyone, it turned out to be milk residue after all, just really thick. Doc said carry on giving water before and after feeds, plus start offering some in between feeds, and use a clean damp cloth 2-3 times a day to gently wipe her tongue. I'm pleased to say it is starting to work and is getting better each day now :D

glad its getting better keep an eye on it :) luisa had a white tongue which i was told was milk residue but turned out to be oral thrush

xx
