I can't help it, really! I thought by now I'd be able to eat stuff and not check on google whether it was safe to eat:dohh:
The latest is dolmio carbonara pasta sauce. Looking at the ingredients it seems fine (Water, Ham (Pork, Water, Salt, Spices, Flavouring, Wheat) (9%), Sunflower Oil, Fresh Cream (5%), Fat Powder (Palm Fat, Lactose, Milk Protein), Cheese (Parmesan), Modified Maize Starch, Butteroil Powder (Butteroil, Glucose Syrup, Lactose, Milk Protein), Bouillon (Celery), Emulsifiers (Mono-diglyceride, Polyphosphates, Orthophosphates , Salt, Wheat Flour, Stabilisers (Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum) , Sugar, Spices, Garlic, Rosemary Extract.)
Then I google carbonara and they're all talking about eggs not being cooked:wacko: am I just going mad or are eggs used in it normally but obviously not this sauce?:haha:

Sorry for the stupid questions:nope:

the jarred stuff will be pasturised so its fine. Its homemade/fresh stuff with rw eggs like homemade mayo or homemade carbonara that you should avoid.

Thanks, I just think I'm going mad! The ingredients for this didn't even mention any eggs so I don't why I immediately looked on google!

If you eat it in a restaurant raw eggs will be used.

But this is a shelf stable product in a jar that won't even go off for years if it isn't opened. So I don't think it is likely to give you food poisoning.

It's like you can't eat fresh mayo but mayo from the jar is absolutely fine.

Stay off google. The list of things you can't eat is tiny. Everything else is fine. Google NHS pregnancy foods to avoid. Anything that is not mentioned on the NHS website you can eat to your hearts content. As a general rule all tinned and jarred food is safe.

With my first pregnancy I was so careful with everything I ate before and after conception and during 9 months of breastfeeding. This time round though my pregnancy was unplanned and I drank a lot over Christmas before finding out - this seems to have made me relax a bit and I am now eating sensibly but not being too worried about checking lists and ingredients etc. I've even had a cup of coffee!!

Ok ladies.... Raw eggs are used but they are not raw once it's ready to eat.

The eggs in carbonara get cooked with the parmezan and cream once you've poured it over and mixed/ stirred it quickly (so it doesn't turn into scrambled eggs) with the REALLY HOT freshly drained pasta IMMEDIATELY (as you should) in a hot container, so once you've prepared it and it's ready to eat you're not eating raw egg......

Eitherway I would prefer doing it this way than the stuff out of a jar where they put god knows types of conservatives and additives in. If the original recipe is only 3 ingredients + salt peper, a bit of basil and ham but what comes out of a jar a gazillion ingredients... I'd wonder.

If you're still iffy pasteurized eggs are also available and if you're living in a country with stringent regulations concerning egg production (like japan) there's actually no worry anyway.
