Why did I receive a hospital letter?

I know you probably can't answer my question only my doctor can but I just want to know if you have experienced anything similar.

I have PCOS I was diagnosed in 2008. I have been TTC since then.

I had an abnormal smear in July and had hospital appointments etc to check my cervix and my ovaries. All came back ok.

I told my doctor I was trying to conceive (new doctor in the surgery but it said on my notes i've been TTC since 2008) he arranged for me to have bloods checked....thyroids, liver, diabetes ect. all came back fine.

I had a second lot of blood tests done to check LH, FSH Progesterone ECT. which was done about 2 weeks ago. I rang the doctor the following morning and theres a note asking me to come into the surgery. So I booked an appointment but I forgot about it due to my fiance's grandad dying last wednesday and us rushing over to Ireland. I then get a call today from the doctors saying I really need to go in and see my GP so i've booked an appointment for next friday. About 10minute after the call my nan calls me to say I have a letter from the hospital saying I have an appointment in gyne on the 17th of Jan.

I dont understand!? I had hospital appointments (in 2 seperate hospitals) in Novemeber to check ovaries ect. why would they send me a new appointment when I was told everything was ok apart from follicles on both ovaries which I knew about because of PCOS. I thought it would be for a fertility specialist but it says I need to see a consultant in gyne.....what do you think this is for??? i'm really worried something might be seriously wrong for them to book a hospital appointment after blood work for hormones...what could it be?? I'm going to see if I can get an appointment for tomorrow but I just wanted to see if anyone h experienced the same thing or similar? Thanks :flower:

Hi, it's possible your GP has referred you to fertility at the local hospital.

In our area we see a gynae at the hospital, none of my letters reffered to them as fertility specialists or a fertility clinic all mentioned an appointment with the gynae clinic.

Hopefully it's good news that you'll be moving forward with help and treatment and nothing bad.

The fertility specialist won't carry out the kind of procedure to help with PCOS. So that's prob why you have the gyne letter. Its a gyne who has to do any surgery on women's bits. Now, areas of NHS within UK seem to be different and what I have said may not be the case, however, they have maybe put you forward for an op to get rid of PCOS. What did you mean bu the follicles on the ovaries, when you said everything was normal except them??

Thank you both of your answers. When I meant everything was normal is because the reason I had a smear done so early (I'm only 21 and minimum age for a smear test in the UK is 25) is because I was bleeding during sex ect. So I had symptoms of cervical/ovarian cancer that my doctor was worried about. So the internal ultrasound was all clear and normal except for follicles on my ovaries (PCOS) which I'm aware of. I knew I had small follicles (Cysts -but the doctor referred to them as follicles) on both ovaries.

That is confusing that he referred to them as follicles rather than cysts. It probably is a gyne appointment with the intention of doing something about it then. Let us know how you get on x

Oh its not unusual as I've had many doctors call them Follicles...they mention them as follicles on this website too : https://www.patient.co.uk/health/Polycystic-Ovary-Syndrome.htm

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), formerly known as the Stein-Leventhal syndrome, is a condition where at least two of the following occur, and often all three:
At least 12 follicles (tiny cysts) develop in your ovaries. (Polycystic means many cysts.)
The balance of hormones that you make in the ovaries is altered. In particular, your ovaries make more testosterone (male hormone) than normal.

Will keep you informed though :)

As _Nell said, when we are referred to the hospital, the fertility side of things still come under the gynaecology department. (I presume you are in the UK)

All my appointments say Gynaecology Oupatient Clinic, not Fertility Clinic.

But I did have to see a gynae consultant before seeing the fertility specialist, I'm not sure if thats routine or not.

Try not to worry, relax, have a good christmas.

Let us know how you get on.

I'm UK. Our Fertility letters didn't say gyne. They have a specific department- ACS (Assisted Conception Service). But think I said before just cos its NHS doesn't mean they all do the same thing x
