Why does formula smell so bad?

What type do you use? SMA smells like mouldy pumpkins, but I changed to cow and gate today (long story, she'd been on sma hungry for ages but her constipation started getting worse so we put her back on the mouldy pumpkin one but it hasn't helped and doesn't seem to agree with her, she's gotten very ducky since the swap :s so we're trying a brand switch, hoping it helps! Sorry for the tangent) and it doesn't seem to smell :D no idea why SMA smells like mouldy pumpkins, but I can't blame her for being sick after drinking it :L

Haha. Moldy pumpkins, love it. We use Earth's Best Organic. It smells like farts/dirty feet. Ugh! And DD gobbles it down!

I assume it's what happens when you dry out milk protein and add supplements to it? No idea why dried milk would smell so horrible though.

it can be the oils they use in it that can make it a bit funky-but i never found the smell of formula offensive-

We use hipp organic and it stinks too! X

Kage--what do you mean oils?

I thought formula was just dehydrated milk with vitamin supplements added?

Pumpkin! That is totally the smell I couldn't quite pin point..it IS a pumpkin smell!

I use Aptamil, It's not totally horrendous but I can't bear it to be sat around. If he hasn't shown interest in it within half and hour it's binned.

No- its a little more complex than cows milk powder with vitamins. To enable babies to thrive (unmodified cows milk can actually harm babies) they modify the cows milk, and then add oils and sugars to similar levels found in breastmilk.

From Wikipedia- (and i know they are not the most reliable of sources but they say it better than i can)
The most commonly used infant formulas contain purified cow's milk whey and casein as a protein source, a blend of vegetable oils as a fat source, lactose as a carbohydrate source, a vitamin-mineral mix, and other ingredients depending on the manufacturer

Most baby milks now also contain fish oil, so if you can imagine milk mixed with fish oil and a crushed up vitamin (remember how bad prenatal vitamins smelled?), there you go. Stinky! Also, they smell much worse when you pre-make them and let them sit around in the fridge. I think probably because it's kinda like leaving old milk lying around even though it's being refrigerated. It still smells a bit like soured milk.

My lgs on Neocate which is a hypoallergenic formula. Its sick! Smells of Smash....

I don't know what a pumpkin smells like! But I can tell you that SMA Comfort smells like sh*t, literally. My LO's poo, smells like her milk. Makes me gag when I smell the milk. Feel so sorry for her having to drink it!
