Over the last few weeks, usually once a day around his last feed, Callum has been screaming his head off when i'm trying to BF him! He screams at first cos he's hungry then he latches on like hes reaaaly hungry has a few large gulps then pulls off and screams bloody murder, latches back on for a few gulps and screams again! This can go on for over an hour and the only way to calm him down is to take him out in the car!! He's definatly hungry cos he acts it and does drink a little bit and is due a feed!! I change his nappy, burp him in every position possible but sometimes he just wont burp!! Could it be trapped wind? I use infacol before his feeds but doesnt seem to be helping! any ideas ladies? thanks xx

Hey Tone

When Charlie latches on & has a few gulps & then comes off he normally has wind. He doesn't scream though.

Sorry cant be more help.

Hmmm, I'll be interested to hear replies to this, Lucius does this once in a while too. I thought it might be because he was upset before I tried to feed him, so he was just too mad to eat? He does get mad if he isn't comfortable too, sometimes I have to switch him to the other boob if he is mad at the beginning, then he calms down.

I have also posted about this. Poppy does it all the time. I just don't get it. I took her to the docs last week and he prescribed Infant Gaviscon as he said it could be an acid problem but we really don't think that's the case.

The difficult thing is that, as she is doing it so often, it makes it hard to take her out and about as she screams so much. And, like you, the only way I can get her to feed is to get her to go to sleep and then feed her while she's half asleep.

Another problem I have is convincing people that she is hungry! People, especially MIL, think that I am trying to forcefeed her! But I know that until she gets a feed, she won't settle down.

It's a toughie. But I think it might be wind. Sometimes, I think Poppy might have some wind before she latches on so I now try and give her a little winding before putting her on. Apart from that, is he frustrated with the flow? Too fast or too slow maybe? Or is his nose blocked?

Sounds like wind to me. How long have you been using infacol for?? I do know you have to use it before every feed, and use it for a while for it to take effect. It really helped Seth, but it took a while to work.

Could be wind, maybe, althought it could be something you're eating too.. Do you eat alot of dairy etc?

Oliver does this.I discovered that all wanted was a snack, then something to suck on. So I always have a dummy to hand. Then feed him and leave him in the bf position once he starts crying and give him the dummy. He sucks away on it and usually drops off to sleep. A bit weird I know, but thats what he wants. Give it a go - you never know, it might work.

Yeah i do, lots of it! But i have since he was born! Could it just suddenly cause problems like that?

Sounds like wind, Even tho jacob is FF this is what he does if he has wind, have you tried gripe water?? xXx

I was going to suggest this too!

I went through this exact phase with Amelia is it soo frustrating and upsetting for both of you.

First few times it was because of a blocked nose, so i used to put a saline drop up each nostril so she could breath, it did help.

Then later i realised she hadn't got a blocked nose and just wanted the comfort but was getting frustrated with the milk coming out.

If you use a dummy then i would suggest doing as Kat said.

If not maybe it is a blocked nose, or maybe your letdown isn't quick enough, or its changed from what they are used too and have to re-adjust?

I wanted to add, int he morning your supply is at its best but throughout the day it kind of diminishes (they still get enough but have to work harder) Are you eating and drinking enough during the day?

How frequently does he feed during the day?

We are struggling with this every day and almost every feed now!

I have tried to suggest to different doctors over the past month or so that we need to address this, as bubs is not getting enough to eat (always eats a little and then starts screaming and can't go on, ever after winding). I have been thinking it's silent reflux (though also puking sometimes) as he also fits many of the other signs. But docs here don't take it seriously and would not prescribe any meds anyway without extensive physical examinations in the hospital. I was hoping to try Gaviscon or something like that to see if it helps, but seems impossible to get it prescribed. Is any of this stuff over the counter in Europe/USA? If yes, maybe I could go to the Western pharmacy here and try find some on my own... not happy to medicate without doctors prescription, though.

Anyway, the screaming is the worst, as it stops him from feeding properly and enough, and is making feed times stressful for both of us. Also his weight gain is pretty slow.

I have been giving a couple of spoons very weak chamomile and fennel tea since yesterday. Let's see if there is any difference....

Would love to hear more ideas from all of you others who are struggling with the same problems.

Do you use a pacifier? I think if you do when he is soo worked up you should give him the dummy to soothe him and calm him down again, they try to latch him on.

Maybe even stripping him right down so he is skin to skin with you....its worth a try if you haven't already.

Perhaps start giving him infacol before every feed it might also help. You could try feeding him in the bath just take someone with you incase he gets upset, its hard to impossible trying to get out the bath with a baby!

Best of luck if i think of anything else i will let you know.
