Will formula help? Did you stop breastfeeding because of this and it work?

My 3 week old has wind.. a swollen tummy thats hard. He crys for most of the day and refuses to latch because of the pain from wind.
He is constantly feeding or comfort sucking from me. My nipples are sore and his latch is getting poorer and poorer.

I am considering switching to formula to see if it helps his tummy troubles.. but know if it makes him worse or doesnt solve it then I will feel so so guilty.

so I am wondering if anyone has any experiences? and if it did work what formula and bottles did you use? and how fast did baby improve?

I didnt switch from bf to ff for that reason, but in my experience my lo had a lot less wind issues when i was bf. we have tried 3 different formulas, lo is now on comfort milk which is for colic and constipation and made for windy babies. but if anything since switching from bf things have gotten worse :( other ladies might be the total opposite though hun xxx

IMO it will make the problem with stomach worse. Have you called a lactation consultant or doctor for help?

I wouldn't really see it helping, unfortunately :(

I'm sure there are products that you can give your LO before feeding which may help his wind? Some people swear by Infacol, though it didn't really work for us. We used a product called Windy Pops, which can be applied to your breasts before LO feeds.

I agree with dragonfly, try speaking to an expert - they should hopefully be able to help :hugs:

I think BF babies are much less prone to wind so FF could make it worse im afraid

I think BF babies are less likley to suffer from wind than bottle fed babies. My friend who BF used windy pops and I think you can just put it straight onto the nipple before a feed, she said it was really good at helping with wind. You can get it in Health Food Shops! :flower:

I breastfed for 7 weeks and my baby had terrible wind! Our midwife said bf babies get bad wind too, it just depends on the baby. I found with bf he got very deep wind that was impossible to burp up causing so much restlessness. After switching to ff with anti colic bottles he burps perfectly after a feed and is so much more settled.

Definitely worth trying windy pops, infacol, dentinox, gripe water etc... give them all a try and see which one works as it does seem to differ from baby to baby. I think if he's prone to wind he'll probably be windy however you feed him. I wouldn't give up BF for that reason only. If you do go to formula though make sure you use an anti colic bottle - Dr Browns are great. Infacol and Dr Browns pretty much stopped my LO's bad wind.

I don't think stopping bfing will help with the wind.. I would try talking to an expert :) All babies suffer from wind, and tummy pains, as their gastrointestinal tract isn't mature.

I breastfeed my son for a month before stopping and switching to formula due to poor latch, and once he was on formula gently terrible wind and got really bad colic! He was a nightmare until four months when he settles much more but we still had to wind him up until 6-7 months because it was so harsh on his belly, comfort milk n gripe water helped but not enough. IMO altho bf babies get wind too, but not as much as ff! X
