I had a soft ice-cream cone from an ice-cream van today without thinking and now i'm terrified i'm going to get listeria and harm will come to my baby
xx

I wouldn't worry, the chances that the ice cream you had had listeria must be extremely low. Its just not worth working yourself up about it. I've had ice cream from a van since being pregnant. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I did too, without realising.
The only reason you can't have it is INCASE you get listeria. I've NEVER had a problem with it, and as long as the van looked clean, you'll be fine. It's kept at a nice temperature and is safe enough. You'd be VERY unlucky to have caught anything from it sweetie. Don't panick cause if you are one of the unlucky tiny few that do get something small from it, stress will lower your defences anyway!

It'll all be fine. If you feel any extra sickness, call MW though xxx

I really wouldnt worry about it ...ive had that kind of ice cream through all my pregnancies when ive fancied one from ice cream van this is my 4th pregnancy....never done any harm x

I wouldn't worry about it too much, I done microbiology at uni and although listeria can grow in cold (usually fridge like) temperature it much prefers slightly higher temperatures so the chances of there being enough in an ice-cream to cause you any problems is very rare and as has already been said if you worry about it and stress out all you'll do is lower your immune defences which certainly won't help anyway!

What is it in ice cream that can lead to listeria then? I'd never even heard you can't have ice cream!!

Its the instant style ice creams. Its not the ice cream thats the problem, but the machinery used to shape it and 'pour' it onto the cone. You're apparently also advised to avoid milkshakes from McD's etc. I didn't know this though and have been eating them all through pregnancy.

I heard you're more likely to get listeria from lettuce than the Icecream.

think its just soft ice cream form mr whippy or mcflurries you should be careful of not all ice cream.

its soft whip ice cream and mcflurries that are the problem as the machines are turned off at night..however the risk is very small..and listeria is very rare

well i did not know that i ate loads of soft icecreams at the start of my pregnancy spesh mc flurrys lol i didnt know u couldnt, infact i think it was 1 of my main cravings to start with till i went off the taste. but i was fine. im sure u will be i wouldnt worry 2 much its not like uve done it every day.

oh dear god!! please dont say that lol .... ive eaten ice cream from icecream van every day this week, its been my craving, all the little kids run up to van when he comes on street then theres me at 21 standing in queue haha xx

I think this "dont eat XYZ when you are pregnant" is ridiculous tbh

you have more chance of being struck by lightning than catching listeria from eating 1 ice cream so relax and stop stressing yourself out :hugs: xx

well thats not in ANY of my books so have been ice creaming away and mcD's milkshakes, do we have to talk food :P your all making me hungry !! lol xx

Thank you girls for the reassurance, I was just so concerned after reading up the horror stories of listeria on the internet and imagined the worst. I just hope everything will be ok with my baby :dohh: there must be so many women especially those pregnant in the summer months who eat ice creams from vans without realising and are ok?
xx

if its any consolation..I ate every single thing you werent supposed to eat when pregnant with my 19 year old and 16 year old..pre packed salads..liver..prawns..ready meals..soft ice cream...burger king..you get the idea!!!!..they were both fine..Ive been quite paranoid in this preg about food but only because Ive had previous losses(not food related)..sadly no worries about ice cream..as im diabetic..so cant eat them...which reminds me..I ate ice cream from an ice cream booth in portugal when pregnant with my 9 year old..and that was probably more of a risk as they advise holiday makers not to eat from those ice cream booths due to the risk of food poisoning

I didnt even know this was on the list of not allowed things, ooops!
im sure everything is fine, the risk of catching something off 1 ice cream is very small !
Ive never even heard of anyone catching anything off an ice cream

Don't worry about it! According to the food standards agency website its safe cos its made with pasteurised eggs ;) x

dont read up on anything on the internet as it will scare the crap outta ya!! ive eaten them through all my pregnancies!! dont worry xx
