i had gestational diabetes with my last pregnancy would i defo get it again in my next pregnancy or would losing sum weight before i get pregnant help me not to get it ?

Hi sunbeam. Losing weight will help but still not garantee you don't get it. I was three stone lighter at the start if this pregnancy but still ended up with it. Sorry to put a downer on things.

Sorry but I've been told the likelihood of getting GD in subsequent pregnancies is very much higher if you've had it before.

A lot of the time, weight has nothing to do with it. People of all shapes and sizes get GD, not just overweight. It's the placenta that causes it as it doesn't do it's job properly...that's how it was explained to me!

There's no knowing if you'll definitely get GD again though :flower:

You will have a higher chance of having it in your next pregnancy, but it's not a given. I had GD in my first pregnancy and at 28 weeks into my second pregnancy I'm okay so far (touch wood!).

However, because I had it before, the hospital are being extra cautious with me and I am being monitored for it and have been since I was 11 weeks. This meaning that I had to attend a diet class, have been doing the blood sugar testing 2 or 3 times a day and having fortnightly visits to the hospital to check up on me! It's all a bit overkill really as my blood sugar readings have been fine overall, especially considering I'm not really sticking to the diet like they keep telling me I should be! I've also been told that I will be having extra scans again at 28, 32 and 36 weeks - although they have now finally conceeded that if all is looking good at next week's scan then I should be able to cut down or stop the blood sugar testing!

I don't know whether this level of harrasment, err I mean looking after, is down to individual hospitals or a nationwide standard so you may not have to go through it all again next time :)

I whish my hospita was as good LOL Im am stuggling to get them to listen to me, Ive had GD on all my pregnancys! it was missed on my second and he was a very big baby and had to go to the Neonatal unit when he was born. he is ok now though.
but my GP has me checking my blood sugars and they are high even with the diet Im getting 6 fasting and any thing from 8.3 to 11.4 post meals :dohh:

Im also spilling ketones and sugar as well they are so lax

I was on insulin last time at 24 weeks so guess I might need it sooner this time

But I say even though its a pain :hugs: its good they are so diligent means bub will be a nice weight rather than big becuase of GD and have no problems with his or her sugars dropping when born  I hope they ease up though sounds like your doing great

I'm just assuming I will get GD in future as I have a family history of type 2 diabetes. Then if I get a negative GTT it will be a bonus. At least I know what to expect now and how to control it. However, I think I would try my best to avoid a GTT until 27 weeks, the time I had the last one done. Depite all assumptions that Logan would be huge and had an enourmous abdominal circumference, this proved to be utter nonsense. He has a long body and the AC seems to be taken from the length of the abdomen made round and not the width. He was 6lb 13oz and was born at 38+5, we had to go out and buy tiny baby clothes as all the newborn ones looked like sacks on him :(
