just curious. she has a cold. ive been giving her a bit of cool boiled water for her dry mouth and salene drops for her stuffy nose. mil brought her some calpol but unsure whether to give it as shes so young. im a bit iffy on giving medication thats not provided by a doctor..

also would you take lo doctors for a cold? or just wait it out at home?

i never thought a cold would have me so stressed out but shes so young and tiny :( poor baba xx

I wouldn't personally, at 4 weeks most babies are abit stuffy, I would just do saline drops, also take her in the shower room with you and close the door when you shower, if your worried ring nhs direct or take her doctors. Xx

no, calpol is not suitable for babies under 8 weeks old. As pp said you can get saline nasal spray from the chemist which is suitable from birth which helps with a blocked nose. I would only take her to the docs if she becomes really weezy or gets a high temp x

There's very little medicine out there rated for less than 3 months which is mainly considered precautionary. However I personally wouldn't give it without checking with a doctor or nurse first. Dd was first given calpol after her 8 week jabs at the nurses recommendation. Though unless your lo has a temperature then calpol won't be much help against a cold.

On top of babybutton's suggestions you could try:
Raising the head end of the crib
Putting some olbas on a tissue and putting it at her head end, but not directly near her head
Rubbing some baby Vicks on her feet to go under socks/pjs
Putting in some saline drops, let them work in, then use a nasal aspirator that requires you to suck (they sound gross but they're soooo much better than bulb types)
Use an olbas vaporiser or put some Vicks in a bowl of hot water and leave it near her crib

I wouldn't give calpol for a cold. I would for a temperature or pain relief once Lo reached the correct age or if directed to by a pharmacist/doctor.

I would go to the doctor if Lo was less responsive than normal or having trouble breathing but otherwise not for a cold as there is nothing they can do.

If she has a temperature yes i would. When my LO was that age she had a cold with a temp, it was boxing day night so GP was closed, i eventually got through to a doctor on the phone and he asked had i gave her some clapol, told him no because shes only 5 weeks. He said they can have it from birth past a certain weight but it says 3 months so people dont dose their newborns up thinking its something small and it turns out to be something worse.

Thinking about it she had some at 2 days old in hospital too

yes she does have a temperature :(

mil and fil insisted its fine to give her calpol they have young kids and said its been given to them by doctors before three months but i always like to check.

salene drops are helping a bit but i wishnthere wss more i could do for her shes very upset and fussy :(

think i will take her the docs tomorrow just to be safe

thanks for the advice girls x

If LO has a temp dont wait till tomorrow to see the GP, ring your out of hours and ask to see/speek to a GP.

I think in babies that young a temperature over 37 or 37.5 needs to be seen by a doctor. Well, this is what hv told me when Sophia had a cold at 5.5 weeks old. And I gave her calpol then.

Also used saline spray, Olbas for babies and raise the head. Hope your poorly bubba gets better soon!

I would seek medical advice before doing anything x

I would if she has high temp or in pain. I gave my little one around 4 weeks when it was needed. My GP said babies have operations and they need pain relief so they use before 3 months. But i would also contact doctor on monday for advice. Good luck, i hope your little one gets better soon.

My lo had calpol at 2 weeks old because she had her tongue tie cut and was in loads pain with it later on.
I did speak to a doctor first though and he told me how much I was allowed to give ..

I would bring her to the doctor... My "Baby 411" book says it's a good precaution in babies under 3 months old :)

No never, it clearly states on the packaging the recommended age and is there for a reason :flower:

I just asked my brother who is a paediatric doctor yesterday if I could give my 5 week old some calpol as she had a slight temperature and he said it 100% safe and that in the hospital they use it on babies from day one. The information on the box is dictated by the pharmaceutical company to cover themselves.

Hope your little one is feeling better soon!

thanks for that as its what i was told as well. or i wouldnt even concider giving her it as im such a paranoid person haha.. just dont like seeing her upset :( but just to be on the safe side im going to take her the docs tomorrow before i give her anything

thanks for your opinions everyone :)

I've given it at 2 weeks old. My son had a blood infection and its what the hospital used to bring down his temperature. I gave it at home afterwards following hospital instructions.

I would speak to your doctor first. I gave Thomas something like a 1.5ml dose I think.

No i wouldn't it say's on the box 2months plus so if the baby had temp or seemed really bad i'd consult a doctor for advice.

I wouldn't give her calpol. Does she have a temperature? She won't need calpol for a cold.

Saline spray in the nose, snufflebabe (can get in chemist) is good too, and perhaps a humidifier or bring baby into a steamy bathroom. It's awful, but it will pass xx
