Would you let your child say the word "dink"?

Recently at a few family gatherings, my husband has said the word "dink" in reference to someone acting stupid. He wasn't calling anyone in the room that, it was someone in a story he was telling. Each time, either my SIL or BIL (or both) gave him a look and asked him not to say it in front of their kids (ages 3, 7, and 9).

The thing is, I don't understand why it's such a horrible word. My SIL said she can't have her kids going around school saying it. Is it slang for penis? It must be... Everything is slang for penis. Ha! I've always just thought it was a silly word that had similar meaning to something like "jerk" or "idiot" or "twerp."

Anyway, would you let your kid say it? Why or why not?

I've always thought it meant small, like when a baby is small they're 'dinky'

Dink is a term for penis, but a swear...like pussy for vagina. At least in BC Canada, where I am from, and the OP too.

My kids are also not allowed to say idiot, jerk, or twerp..or stupid, or swears...like f&ck, ect.

yes - but different meaning in the UK.
What does it mean where you are from?

I've always thought it meant small, like when a baby is small they're 'dinky'
Dinky does mean small. And sometimes my husband also jokingly calls someone "dinkus", so I just thought "dink" was short for that.

Well, my husband grew up in Chilliwack, BC, and he didn't think it was a swear. I grew up down in Washington, and I definitely never thought it was a swear. Sounds like it can really vary from region to region.

Now that I know that it can really offend people I won't let my son say it when he starts talking. I wonder how many words there may be in the future that I let him say because I just think they are silly, but then I find out they are slang for genitals. :dohh:

Yeah - it means small.
My son is dinky - he is a little dink!

I've never heard of it but if you look on urban dictionary it's listed as a word with lots of meanings - an asshole, another word for penis, a derogatory term for a Vietnamese person.. and that was just on the first page!

So no, I probably wouldn't!

I went onto urban dictionary and found this

Dink
Local slang in Vermont. A stupid person, a jerk. A general put-down of one's abilities.
You are such a dink.

Presumably that's what your OH meant by it?
I've heard of it meaning small (as I'm from the uk) and I've heard of it meaning idiot, but not once in my life have I hear it meaning penis?!

Well in that case , my husband is a dink!!

Never heard of it but I guess it's like a US person saying the word fanny!!:haha:

I had never heard of this word until now. I will say no, I wouldn't use it in front of kids after reading it's meaning. I think if we were to use that word here they might mishear it as another word that also means penis!

I've never heard it, but I try to avoid any word that labels somebody, especially in a derogatory way.

My LO and OH have "dinks" where they gently bumps heads together. e.g "can I have a dink?"(instead of kiss). I'm from the u.k where it means small or small bump. E.g I've just bumped (dinked) the car!! I have heard it referred to as penis on BnB before!!

im from uk and if my lo ever said it i would think she means small as thats what i refrer it to as never heard of it meaning any of the others but i spose it depends where u are from for people to have different meanings xx

I also had never heard of it but now knowing what it means if I were there I would not like people using it around my children x

Never heard of that one before, I don't think it's something we say down here.
