Would you let your child say the word "dink"?

Weird, I'm in Vancouver, BC and I had no idea it meant penis?? I've only heard it used as small or as a sound word.

I guess if people around here use it that way, I wouldn't want my daughter saying it. I guess I better not say it to anyone either!

My LO says dink when she wants a Drink.. Never thought it could mean something else.. In actual fact I've heard loads of the Los at play group call drink a dink

Never heard of it, but my eldest (3) said the following to me a few months ago;

"Mummy, you're such a penis!"

Did not know kids could be so bloody hilarious

If a bell rings or something I often say "Dink!" as the sound for it never knew at all it was offensive

Josh says it for 'drink' as he can't quite get the 'r' in there. Only other time I've heard it is as another word for small - 'dinky'. Had no idea it was used to be offensive

Well it's got a completely different meaning over here (UK) I use it in reference to something small so would not mind Alf saying it but given the meaning where you are I don't think I'd encourage him to use it.

Yes, but it doesn't mean anything bad here like it seems to in other places.
He generally just calls things stupid anyway, so not really an issue. He's been known to run around with the flashlight yelling that he's looking for the 'stupid cat'

I always refer to LOs penis as dinkle so I guess its not a great word.
Personally I don't find swear words offensive unless said in an offensive manner so I'd let him say it especially considering a) its not really a swear. b) he doesn't mean it to be one. c) hes your child and he will say what he likes. If they don't like it, well their kids will be the 13 year old rebellious hookers.

Now when your LO tells someone they're a dickhead cause he doesn't want his bum changed, thats a different story. The one time zane did that to my mum he spent most of the afternoon in a time-out (my orders) - partly for the swear, mostly for refusing to apologise. he hasn't said a nasty work since XD

Would never use it in my house. My husband is half Vietnamese and its used as a derogatory word for someone who is Vietnamese (I think someone already mentioned that). I know people use it to mean "idiot" as well but I won't use it in that sense (or any other) out of respect for my DH & our daughter.

And yes, it means "stupid" or whatever, but also penis.

I wouldn't allow it unless he wanted to talk about his penis (and I don't think he would, we just say "penis" and he doesn't have any English friends, French boys don't call it a dink). It is not a nice thing to say when calling a person that.

Over here to give someone a dink is to let someone ride on the handlebars of your bike. Funny how the same word can mean so many things!

The real clanger is when you've been using a word you think is a very mild pejorative term or expletive indeed, only to find that it's actually rhyming slang for something ballistically rude. I thought that 'charlie' and 'berk' were harmless things to call someone who had done something mildly stupid until I came across the rest of the rhyming slang expressions... Charlie Hunt and Berkely Hunt...

I instantly giggled when I read this thread title. Dink in my area is a really funny way to say "penis" and also to call someone stupid or silly or goofy, "your such a dink!" But I always laugh and see it as a silly word, similar to saying "weiner" for penis, it's just silly. I never ever thought of it as derogatory or rude at all, just funny. And dinkus, well don't get me started on how silly that word is!! It's the long professional version of "dink" I consider.

Now would I want my kids saying it? No, but if they did I'd fall down laughing.

I've never heard of it TBH.

Having said that, when I was a teenager I was once at my friend's house and her mum called her a silly dildo!!! She'd heard the word and thought it sounded funny. She had no idea what it meant!!! My friend nearly died. Not sure if she ever told her what it meant x
