I've had both babies readmitted to hospital in the early days.

#1 was born by C-Section at 42+1. She wouldn't latch, and at 24 hrs was given formula. Between 24 and 72 hours she was given 30ml FF every 4 hours. At 72hrs she began latching and we were discharged a few hours later. However my milk hadn't come in, I'd had no stimulation to the breasts until she started latching. At 5 days she was readmitted with an 18% weight loss. Once in hospital she was given FF, and spent the next few days asleep and breast refusing again. After domperidone, a lot of pumping I eventually got her breast feeding.

#2 was born via forceps at 39+5. He latched straight away. At around 48hrs old he began slowing down with his feeding. On day 3 he was very sleepy, and not feeding. We were admitted to the children's ward and he had bloods taken that indicated he could have an infection, possibly meningitis. While he was poorly he needed tube feeding, then syringe feeding but was still weak so I expressed and bottle fed while he got stronger. He had a lumbar puncture and blood cultures which didn't show anything, so they concluded it was a virus.

What is bugging me, is what if the same thing caused both these. And they presented differently as #1 had 48hrs of formula which kept her stronger. I needed domperidone both times to get my supply up. Both babies were very sleepy. Both lost loads of weight. #2 was a diagnosis of exclusion- they only thought virus as no bacteria was grown.

I am due to book with the midwife for #3 in a few days time and I'm starting to think about plans surrounding birth and afterwards. I'm worried that the same thing is going to happen with this baby and want to prevent it. I also don't want to start using formula willy nilly and ruining what could be a normal breastfeeding relationship.

Anyone offer any advice? Coincidence or something happening with my babies or milk in the early days?

I'd say unlucky coincidence but hopefully your midwife can help calm your concerns. I read some of your blog and the post with the monkeys tandem nursing was so funny and informative!

Thank you.

My sensible head does say coincidence. My children were born in different hospitals and we've moved since having #2, so this will be another hospital which I think makes it harder as I can't get someone to have a quick look at notes and see what they think.

Sounds like bad luck to me, but maybe you could consider antenatal expressing to have a back up early on. Have you got reliable breastfeeding support available? Hopefully third time lucky! :hugs:

Its been a while since I've been to the local breastfeeding group, but I'm intending to start going again in Sep. Antenatal expressing +/- a SNS is something that's crossed my mind. Not sure how much I'd manage to get out.

I've got supplies of domperidone hidden away and I'm yet to decide if my back up plan will be a hospital/midwife one, or a go it alone one.

Maybe you could see how it feels when you meet them. You'll probably get the feeling if they're on the same page as you or not. Hopefully you won't need a back up plan at all though!
