My breastfed 2 week old seems to be uncomfortable with gas only during the night. He's very chill all day, usually going 3 hours between feeds with zero fussiness... then from about 8 am to 6 am he seems to get really gassy/uncomfortable/fussy after feeds. He is eating more frequently at night. One thought I had was he's comfort feeding and eating too much? My first son was fussy 24/7, so I'm not sure what to do about this split schedule. Is he reacting to my dinner?

I give him far more burp/upright time after night feeds than I do during the day because he seems so uncomfortable, so it's not that he's eating and going straight back onto his back.

Any ideas or suggestions? I was thinking of introducing a paci to see if letting him suck without feeding might help, but my almost 3 y/o is still paci obsessed so I was hoping to avoid one this time!

My 6 week old is still suffering. Following

It could be a number of things. 1. Gas like you mentioned. 2. growth spurt, as that usually makes them more fussy and want to eat more and night time is when we have less milk. 3. just the way your baby is.

I am betting on #2 as from week 2-3 they have a growth spurt and try to increase their milk supply.

It is possible if he is sleeping on a flat surface at night that it could be a problem if there is a reflux issue. If you're comfortable with it sleep baby on an incline and see if it helps.

Most young babies have a horrible, scheduled fussy period. People sometimes call it the witching hour - though it's usually more like HOURS. Ours usually started around 6 pm and carried on for a while ... she did grow out of it. But as a pp said, things like growth spurts make it much worse. I think it's inevitable really, and something you just have to ride out and trust to pass, ugh!

My 5 week old is the same. She was spitting up a lot too and nursing constantly and nights were horrible. Turns out she had GER. (Reflux). She is still gaining weight but not enough to make the doc happy. She had a upper GI scan done this week that confirmed it. If I lay her in on her side she tends to sleep alot longer then if I were to put her on her back. I also have her a in a rock and play because I think her crib bothers her reflux (I put it up a angle as much as I could without her rolling down and still hated it!). Goodluck. My first baby had colic, turned out she had a milk allergy and a soy allergy and I drank milk for a while without knowing. >. <

Sorry to hear about your little one, but I'm glad you've got a diagnosis! I have stopped eating dairy and soy. I think it's unlikely to be the cause, but my grandmother has a milk protein allergy (life long), and it can run in families... My first was really colicky, and looking back I wonder if I should have done more for him. He outgrew it, so perhaps there was nothing to be done.

I've raised the bed of his co-sleeper a bit tonight, so I guess I'll see how that goes!

Definitely runs in families! Everyone in my family has a milk allergy at first. I didn't outgrow it myself until I was about 10 ( I remember getting sick after drinking milk but my stubborn self loved milk so much I found it worth it, haha). My first daughter outgrew it after a year. I ended up having her on Nutramigen formula because of her colic, milk and soy allergy. Stuff made me have a different baby!

I don't know if my second one has the milk intolerance, but I've taken precautions and assume she is because of my family history (my father and sister had it, all three of my sisters children also had the milk allergy!) . I haven't had milk or anything Dairy since I've had my second. I breastfeed, and since I'm going back to work in 6 weeks, i have started her out with soy about a week ago (just once or twice a day) and so far she's been okay with it! I want to get the formula straight before I go back to work. I plan on still breastfeeding a bit if my body can adjust without drying up, but I'm not stressing myself out with my very active and busy work and trying to pump. (I'll pump on my hour lunch break to keep supply up). Have you had any Dairy at all? I know my doctor told me it would take up to 2 weeks to get it all out of your system!
How did the raising the cot go? Better?

I've avoided dairy and I think it has made a difference! It's so hard to know whether it's maturation of the digestive tract or something I'm doing to help... but regardless, he is doing much better. Raising the bed didn't seem to do much other than make him uncomfortable... but avoiding dairy, giving him plenty of upright time after feeding, burping during feeds, and pulling him off whenever my letdown is too strong all seem to be helping (or at least not hurting!). The only dairy I really eat is the fatty stuff, so I'm OK having a reason to hold off for now any way (I've got a bridesmaids dress to fit into!).

I understand that! I'm trying to lose my baby weight! Not being able to eat dairy has been a blessing for me! I've already lost 15 pounds. 24 pounds if you count the baby weight (she was only 5.8oz).
