Hi everyone.

We are devastated at our 20 week ultrasound.

At one angle we are thrilled we are having a little boy and that now we have one of each. But the ultrasound results have snatched our little happiness away.

They think he has clubbed feet. We are told nothing about how sever it is. And another bonus. They cannot see the heart "clearly". We have NO clue what thar means. They see 4 chambers and a strong heartbeat. Now we are being refered to a perinatologist who makes a more thorough exam. What they want to rule out is any chromosomal abnormality associated with these symptoms. Possibly down syndrome.

We are shocked because we did a ivf and pgd and transfered a genetically normal embryo. Anybody has had similar experiences and it turned out to be a misdiagnosis ? I have heard some babies look like having club foot on ultrasound and perfectly normal when born.

I know we wont know anything for sure until further diagnosis but just looking for some positive experiences.

My friend and his wife were told their baby had a club foot. She doesn't. They couldn't clearly see my son's heart during the 20 week scan, nor his spine. They wanted to do another scan, but I opted out. They want to check the blood flow in and out of the heart and it could be that he just wasn't cooperating enough for them to see what they wanted. I know my son wasn't very cooperative and I couldn't get him to change positions that day. My son is a very rambunctious 2 year old now.

All the false conclusions from these screening scans are the reason I opted out of the first trimester screen. They can only tell you if there is an increase chance of an abnormality, nothing is conclusive until LO is born.

If the embryo was screened before transfer, then wouldn't that have ruled out chromosome issues? I'm asking because I've only read basics of pgd so not sure what all is tested or the accuracy. Sorry you're in this situation. Not knowing is awful. I hope your appointment with the perinatologist goes well and baby is healthy.

It took ages on my 20 week scan for them to see the blood flow properly on the heart they need to see it going in and out to check the valves are the right way it's tricky baby has to be in just the right position so I wouldn't worry too much about that it's common to need a rescan for that. Also I know someone who was told baby had a club foot and she doesn't as well

Hello. I don't have any personal experience of club foot but my friend's baby was born with club feet. He had an operation to fix the club feet then he had to wear a foot brace for about 6 months. He's now nearly three and runs around a lot. You would never know he had club feet. He is such a bright boy too. No genetic issues. In fact my friend said the surgeon who performed the operation was born with club feet too which were corrected as a child too.

What I'm trying to say is, if he does have club feet there is an operation available and it doesn't necessarily mean any other issues like downs.

That is what we are assuming about the heart (the blood flow to and from the heart was not clearly seen). But my question is how can a baby survive for 20 weeks and be so active if his heart didn't function properly ?

My MIL has a mild club foot (which she never corrected) so there lies the answer. My DD also looked like having a club feet at her 20 week scan (they never diagnosed it though) but she was born just fine. Tricky !!

If they said the same at your dd's scan and she was fine I really wouldn't worry too much!!!

Congrats on your little guy!!!

No they did not say about that at my DD's US but we had a slight doubt looking at her US pics.

O I see. Will they be doing another ultrasound?

Yes but at the perinatologist's. They have a better ultrasound machine which can go into details. At this point I am just waiting for their call and hoping to hear about normalcy of heart and ruling out other bigger problems.

On the other note, we saw my radiologist report and it mentions nothing about these. They have marked "seen" for all the organs. Also his biometry is within normal levels.

I understand that you must feel slightly devastated but i just want to reassure you xx

One of my friends son was born with clubbed feet. They were at the most extreme end of the spectrum.
When he was a baby he had 2 operations to straighten them. He had boots and bar to correct them etc.
Its a long process but their son knew no different and when he is older he wont even remember it.
His feet are fully corrected now, he walks fine and is a happy little boy :)

Its hard hearing news like that however if it is the outcome its not a really bad one xx

Got an appointment for next wednesday at perinatologist's. That's one long a** wait !!

Tough times. At this point I'm hoping that it is just club feet and nothing worse. It breaks my heart to see DH weep.

Just a quick question if at all my baby has down syndrome could the ultrasound have picked some other things up ?

Did you have pgd or pgs done on your emby? They differ, pgd is basically looking for a specific syndrome or disease, pgs is the screening used to check for any abnormalities, if you had the pgs done I really wouldn't worry about downs sybdrome!

I had a PGS done on all of my 5 embies. Transfered a normal best looking embryo. That is where we are at denial. All these screening and to end up with something we tried to avoid in first place !! Frustrating.

Meanwhile we are trying to go into a 3d4d US place just to have a good look at the baby.

So the appointment was not as bad as we had thought it to be. The ultrasound showed no other abnormalities other than bilateral club feet. Kind of relieved but sad at the same time. Is there any thread related to kids having club feet on here ? Can someone please direct me ??
