I got offered a new job last week, which I accepted. At the time of the interview I was almost 19 weeks. Since then I have had my gender scan and have reached 20 weeks. I don't start until July 20th which is 2 weeks from now, at which point I will be 22 weeks.

I did not tell them during my interview process that I was pregnant and I didn't want to do it over the phone when they offered me the position. My due date is estimated as November 20th so I will be on the job for 4 months when that comes along. I have no doubt that my pregnancy will not hinder my ability to do my job and I also have every intention of returning to this job after the baby is born.

When should I tell them about the pregnancy? I am just hoping it doesn't affect their decision to have hired me and I don't want them to feel like I kept it from them in a malicious way or anything.

Thoughts?

Is there a trial period with this job? Depending on how pregnant you look right now, maybe you could wait until the trial period is over. If someone fired me while I was pregnant, I'd probably be suing them.

I'm not sure if there is a probationary period yet. I know that legally they can't fire me because I'm pregnant, but they could just as easily say it is some other reason. I won't know the specifics of the job until the week before I start.

Yeah that's why I'm thinking if you passed the trial period then they couldn't have a valid reason to fire you. Even if they did fire you and make up another reason, I'd still be kicking up a fuss!

I don't know what country you are in but in the UK you get your MATB1 form at 25 weeks to give to your employeer which then gives you the right to maternity leave - I would say that was the latest you could tell them really!

But also with you only being there 4 months before maternity leave probationery periods (or what I have known) are generally 3 months or 6 months

I personally told my boss after my 12 week scan as I wanted them to be prepared to cover me when I am off - with my 1st I told my boss about 20 weeks and still they didn't get my cover in until a week before I left which made the last week very stressful for me to try to hand everything over!

I personally would tell them as soon as especially as you are planning on returning as you do not want to make it awkward for yourself

Good luck in whatever you decide

I just started a job at 17 weeks pregnant. A care job. I never told them in the interview and I didn't plan on telling them until 25 weeks (when law requires). However, on my first day, I had to disclose if I was pregnant for health and safety reasons. So yeah it's out and they were completely fine about it. I was so worried and felt guilty but it's turned out ok for me. They've not been funny with me at all

I found out i was pregnant a week after being offered a new job and told my new boss at 7 weeks. Im now almost 16 weeks and start my new job next monday. I preferred being honest and going in with everyone having time to get used to the idea x

You have to tell them legally by 25 weeks, so once you start your job you will have to tell them at some point in the first three weeks x

Some are talking about legalities, but these depend on where you live. I teach in Canada and was only required to give 4 weeks written notice for my maternity leave. I still think it is better to disclose earlier though, because as these ladies are saying, you want to be honest and upfront with any employer that you plan to return to.
