I just had my 20 week scan yesterday, they confirmed he is indeed a boy, his hearts fine, brain looks fine, took measurements for spine, head, tummy, checked for blood flow and liquid in his tummy! Looking great!

I knew I was on the cusp of a healthy BMI. When I think back now, I can't remember whether I was literally on the dot for healthy BMI and my midwife said oh you just missed out on an early scan or something.

But at my clinic appt after my scan the doctor said I'll see you in July for your next scan, he had mentioned my scoliosis which I need an extra look at with an aneasthetist for my spine, and I thought he meant xray, and I asked 'you mean I need another X-ray?' He said no your BMI was just under so you require a 28 week scan to ensure the baby is still growing normally as you were underweight.

So it has confused me because I'm sure I was on the dot, or maybe even 0.1 over my BMI or something daft.

The sonographer seemed very happy with the scan and didn't mention anything worrying in the notes. Should I be worried or is this completely normal? Anyone else had to have a 28 week scan?

I'm not complaining, I get to see him again, but did anyone under their BMI have any issues on the later scan? Xxx

This is completely normal darling, they automatically give growth scans for higher or lower BMI, I have had a 28 and 36 week growth scan because of high BMI but it's the same. They are quite quick scans and just measure baby's growth and I've enjoyed them :)
I understand you're a bit confused because you thought your BMI was okay, but it sounds like they are just throwing it in there to cover their bases/follow their guidelines, not because there was any issue at the 20 week scan.

My 20 week scan was also perfect and I still had the two growth scans (which were perfect ;) ). So no worrying mumma! XX

Oh that's good then! Yeah he seemed a decent size and she was happy with everything, even saw his legs stretched out completely straight above his head! So I think length wise they're happy.

Oh I guess because they don't have much fat on them now, the next scan is to make sure they've put on enough fat maybe??

Ah that's good :) I'm so glad I get to see him again!

Xxx

Added a photo of the scan yesterday in his awkward position!

Aww gorgeous photo, doing some aerobics in there hehe. Each scan will measure the same places, usually head circumference, abdominal circumference and femur length and then they can plot baby's growth on a graph and check it's following an average pattern, I.e. not growing too quickly or too slowly. They will usually also check fluid levels and stuff, just make sure it's all fitting into average measurements.
I found the extra reassurance really nice actually and as I said the growth scans are pretty quick, sort of 5-10 mins if baby cooperates :) x

I guess it is nice for the reassurance! I am a big worrier but I'm surprised that so far so good. Almost running too smoothly, I reckon seeing as he likes his legs up that far (he's done it at 16 weeks and 20 weeks) knowing my luck he'll come out bum first or something haha :p flexible little bugger!

So glad for the reassurance and I am thankful I get to see him so much as I'm a first time mommy :)

Feel much better now. Was just worried that maybe things go wrong on the later scans saying they're too underweight or something. But I guess I was just on the mark and have had a very healthy appetite while pregnant, so I've definitely piled on any extra pounds that I needed! So he should be getting enough fat to fatten him up some more!

Hey, as the other ladies suggested it is normal I had scans every four weeks, it was really nice to see the babies so much. With my first two babies I had a low BMI but both babies came out 7lb8oz and 7lb10oz. This time they have not offered me extra scans even though I still have a low BMI again but I think that's because they can see my weights not been a problem in the past.

I do miss seeing the baby now after having so many scans in the past I will be having a private scan just to see him <3

Relax & enjoy x
