2nd Job while on Maternity Leave?

Hi I am looking for some advice. Does anyone know if you can earn a 2nd wage from a part time job while you are off on maternity leave from a full time job? And does it make a difference if its when recieving company maternity pay or statutory maternity pay?

It is a theoritical question, I am due to go off on mat leave for my 2nd baby next month and I would love to get a part time job ( evening & weekend shifts so OH would be home by then ) to earn more money - but I think this would not be allowed the same way as if you get SSP from one company usually their policy is you would be in breach of contract / disciplinary action if you still went to work for another job.

Sorry for the long winded question - Ideally I want to get a part time job while I am off work and then hand my notice in so I would not return to full time but I cannot risk waiting to hand my notice in before applying for another job if that makes any sense

Hi hun, I am pretty sure you are not allowed to do this. If you start work for another company while on maternity leave, you will lose your SMP from your employer for the rest of your leave. Unless you were working for the second company 15 weeks before you started your maternity leave at the first company.

I *think* you are allowed to earn on a self-employed basis without losing your SMP, but I stand to be corrected...

As above, you cannot work a second job while you are on maternity leave, as the whole point of it, is that the government pay you while you are off. To clarify the self employment situation, this is only if you are already self employed and claiming MA instead if SMP, and you too can only work 10 days throughout the whole period. Can you do your 10 keep in touch days with your current employer to get a bit of money in?
