I had not realised there was a chickenpox outbreak at LO's nursery. Two nights back I saw she had 2 spots on the back of her neck but did not think much of it. Today morning, she had it on her face and her chest and realized it must be chickenpox. Doctors have prescribed Paracetamol if she gets a temp and Calamine lotion and rushed me out without telling me what to do :growlmad:

So I have kept her in loose clothing and gave her Calpol as she was complaining of pains and was hot. I dabbed the Calamine lotion where I could see the spots but I dont know if this can be applied to the face and genitals?

Please could I have some advice on this?

Dab calamine on the spots with cotton wool.

But, I will also say when Abby had Chicken pox we found the calamine was very drying and she hated it. We used poxclin instead. It's a mousse you rub over the spots. much better.

Thank you for the tip.

I'll see how she goes with it. Is it safe to be applied to the face and genitals too?

(Im worried as LO has sensitive skin)

Thanks.

Also, baths with bicarbonate of soda in can help. Just stick a few tablespoons of it in Luke warm water.

Piriton before bed is good for itch at night, too. We used calamine in the bath and neat on spots. It worked well!

We gave Lana regular calpol, piriton and used calamine cream, which is much better than the lotion

It might dry out the skin, but we put calamine everywhere (I mean everywhere) except near eyes or mouth.

Bicarbonate of soda baths worked well for us, DD loves baths so she had a couple a day xx

Calamine soothes at first but then dries and it itches,! I used a gel called virasoothe, cools the skin and helps prevent scaring. Piriton as well helped to relieve itching,

Piriton! My toddler had it, it prevented her scratching so she was left with very few marks xx

A bath in bicarbonate is meant to work wonders, hope your lo is better soon x

Try Aqueous Camomile Cream. I used it with both of mine. You can get a tub of it for £2 from Boots.

I found it much better than the lotion as I could lather it all over as opose to dabbing it. (easier to do on a toddler!)

I also swear by the stuff for nappy rash.

I like to help on chicken pox queries as I had it last year myself (not at all nice having it as an adult!) so I think I can give some good tips on what actually works! Then Belle caught it off me a couple of weeks later so I could use my knowledge on her! i think people have mentioned my tips but here is my advice!
NOT calamine lotion, as others have said it can get itchy when it dries, so I used virasoothe. Someone also mentioned Eurax which I also used but it is not recommended on under 3's without consulting a doctor (I didn't use this on Belle)
Bicarb of soda baths, a couple of times a day. Really soothes and also dries the spots quicker.
Calpol for any fever, and piriton for the itchiness!

Hope your LO is better soon, Belle bounced back quite quickly from it, unlike me - it was horrendous!

Me and my 2 boys had it back in July, my youngest was only 7 weeks old at the time and my eldest was nearly 2. We just used calamine lotion with cotton wool, though for me the effects only lasted a minute then i was itching again! The itching will be at its worst for around 3 days, then it's less annoying. Both my boys were ok throughout, i ended up in hospital though as my immune system was pants!

Thank you so much ladies for all your replies. LO is being very brave and very good at not scratching - she hates medications any where near her and I feel bad for her, its reminded me of her being just a baby again. She is doing better today :)

Glad she is on the mend hun, she will be back to herself in no time xxx
