5 days late, no cramps, brown discharge

Hey, I'm new to all of this and me and my partner have been trying to conceive for a few months now. Af was suppose to come on the 16th but have had no signs of her. I have had sore nipples, tired etc. I had brown discharge when I wiped earlier today so I put a liner on, but since then nothing. Can anyone help me with what spotting is? And how you can tell whether it is my period or not. Any similar stories will be lots of help!! Thanks guys
