I had my appt today. They wont start checking my cervix until Im 36 weeks which Im ok with. Everything is looking good. BP 130/70 I believe but they are monitoring it. Heres the thing:

At 27 weeks I had a sonogram done and the baby was measuring at 3lbs. I found out today because the tech never told me but my doctor told me today. She said theres a chance my baby is like 5lbs right now!! Is that unheard of?? And in a case like this, do they end up inducing you if the baby gets too big? I get scared of induction because of the pain I hear about :(

She said my baby dropped and hes very low into my pelvis and his feet are way under my ribs. So hes in position but I just worry about the weight. I gained 4lbs in 2 weeks and Im sure most of its going to him.

I guess my question is...is it normal for a baby at 30 weeks gestation to be 5lbs?

Mine was 5lb at 31 weeks I think, im now 40 weeks he must weigh over 9lb but no one but me seems to be worried! Ull.have a few more growth scans id imagine then if he/she gets real big they will induce u at 37-38 weeks id guess xx

Oh my gosh I cant imagine having a 9 or 10lb'er...lol. They actually said something about not doing anymore scans :/ Not sure why.

Well My 3rd daughter was born at 34 weeks weighing 5 pounds 11oz. Also they can be really off on weight on scans and guessing by trying to feel the baby so he might be smaller then they are saying.

I had my cervical check today and the only good news was that I am still closed. She is very very low and my cervix is now wrapped around her head and very thin. He said that I pretty much only had to dilate now.

My sister gave birth at 30 wks and her son was 5lb 1oz, so I suppose yes it's normal x

9lb to 9lb 6 is fine! Anything over that im not loving! Ur midwife should request another growth scan! I measure big too thats why I had 3!

It seems as though those who carried bigger babies ended up in labor a lot sooner. Is this common?

And thanks for the replies girls!

I wish! Mines big im almost 40weeks and mines head isnt even engaged yet!

Don't worry too much they really can be off by a good amount..with my first they induced me at 39 weeks because they thought he was over 10 lbs but he came out 8 lbs 7 oz still big but not like they thought.
and inductions isn't really that bad! I was induced with both my kids so I don't know what natural contractions feel like but it was bearable :)
good luck

I'm due the same day as you :) I am also measuring big and my OB ordered an ultrasound for when I'm about 34 weeks to check things out. I hope baby doesn't end up being TOO big...but myself and my husband were big babies (10.5lbs and 9lbs)...and my son was big too (8lb 11oz). My crotch might be doomed!!

Did they give you a %ile? I had a growth scan at 29+3 and she was guessed to be 3 lbs 2 oz which they said was 54%ile. I have hypertension so they watch my babies for the opposite problem. They can have too slow of growth towards the end or stop growing. Megans weight was off by a lb when she was born so the scans aren't 100% accurate.

My babs was measuring 5lbs at 30+4 so your not bad.

No I didnt get a %ile. Man I shouldve asked. Feb 23rd is my next appt so Ill be sure to find out then.

Thank you girls for all the replies. I have big babies as well. First was 8 1/2, second was 7 and third was 8. But this one seems to be growing rapidly lol.

I dont mind just as long as hes healthy when hes born :)

I know several people who were warned that they were having giant babies, and the babies were born weighing 2 (or more) pounds less than predicted. I wouldn't worry too much, as there's not really much you can do about it.

To be honest, I think scans can cause more worry than they are worth. If someone has a medical condition - like gestational diabetes, then I understand why they do them. But, if the baby is healthy, and just *big*, then really, the scan doesn't do anything.

I say this as someone who was given THREE scans since 31 weeks, which, in hindsight, I should have turned down. So, the baby is big. My DH has a family with a history of big babies. How big...who knows. My guess is that he will be in the 9-10lb range. The only thing the scan did was cause me to panic, and cause my OBGYN to start pushing for me to induce - which I have decided against.

I also don't think that in most cases (except for a specific medical condition) JUST having a big baby is a reason to induce. They say they want to induce because having a big baby increases the chance of a c-section, but INDUCING increases the risk of a c-section too, especially with a big baby! Once they induce, you are constantly monitored, most people who get induced also get an epidural (because inducing does make it more painful for most people), and then you are stuck in bed, and can't move around. Movement is really good for labor...so it sort of becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The actual percentage of true cephalopelvic disproportion, where the baby can't fit through the birth canal is pretty rare - well under 0.05% of women, and way more than that have big babies. And, they can't tell if the baby is going to fit or not just by looking at its size. The only way to know is to have labor not progress.

If your plan is to have an epidural, which is totally appropriate, then inducing the a big baby would make a lot of sense. If your hope is to have an un-medicated birth, then I would try to avoid inducing as long as possible.

Thank you for the info :)
I do plan on getting an epidural. I had epidurals in all of my pregnancies but with my last one the epi wore off and I ended up having natural labor. Wasnt fun at all! LOL.

I really rather go on my own. No induction. But we'll see how everything goes. Im not exactly worried though. Just curious. I do see him coming out pretty big though!! I can literally feel him being big.

At my 33 week appt I asked my doc about how big she thought LO was and she said she hoped she was about 5 Ibs. at that point. but I am not sure how they measure approx weight. I haven't had an ultrasound since 4 months and she has just been measuring my belly with a tape measure.

I am 31w4d and my baby is measuring 4lbs. I have a friend whose son was was 7lbs at 33weeks and by the time he was born he was almost an 11lb baby. All her babies were bigger though, and I think the earliest she ever delivered one of her five kids was 39 weeks.

I've been dealing with this too (a big little guy). He was estimated at 5lbs10oz at my last scan at 33 weeks exactly. He is in the upper 80th percentile (not sure exactly what number). The doctor who did the scan said they may want to discuss induction or a c-section if he continues on this track, but at this point my regular OB doesn't seem to terribly concerned and will not discuss either until we see what he is at my next scan (36 weeks)**.

The doctor at the ultrasound told me they are generally only a half pound off give or take on size...but since it's an MFM doc they may have "higher tech"/more accurate ultrasounds at their office

Anyway, as long as you don't have any health risks or don't go insanely over due, you cannot be forced into induction...but if you're worried about pain, it is my thought that it's going to hurt either way!

**P.S. I was dubbed high risk in the beginning due to a high NT scan which is why I get scans every 3 weeks.
