I have never been worried about my LO's development. I just don't believe in it and always think they will develop at their own pace.

However, I'm starting to get a little concerned now that he's not babbling. By babbling, I mean he is not making consonant sounds. He does plenty of ooohs and aaahs, blows raspberries, squeals and laughs. I've heard him say 'ba' before and 'um' which sometimes sounds like mum when he says 'umum'. But, it's rarely and I don't know whether I should be worried?

He makes plenty of eye contact with me and there is nothing wrong with his hearing. He responds to his name and jumps when there is a loud noise. He loves playing peek-a-boo games with me and will look at something if I point to it. He doesn't copy me yet, by waving or clapping etc. He does reach his arms out to be picked up, as he loves nothing more than for me to hold him.

I read to him 2-3 times a day and talk to him pretty much all day long. He is very vocal in the sense that he is always making noise, just not the noises I think he maybe should be making at this age

What do we think?

My little wasn't making ANY consonant sounds, until just a few days ago when all of a sudden it started. Our LO's are pretty close in age, I was getting a little worried as well until she woke up one morning with a whole new vocabulary of sounds.

My LO has not reach out to be picked up, she's getting close. She doesn't really copy me either, but I've been teaching her sign language ( a few common signs) since she was about 5 months old and she has started to sign "more". But if I clap she just laughs!

I wouldn't worry too much, I know all babies develop at different rates.

Hope this makes you feel a bit better!

Thanks girls.

I am a firm believer in all babies develop differently, but it's so hard not to worry! I just assumed he would be babbling now.

Janers, that's a big help thank you. He is 8 months on the 9th August. I wish I had tried to teach sign language, how wonderful! My LO does the same if I clap, he just laughs. I also say 'ta-ta' every time I leave the room and wave and then say 'hi' in a really excited voice whenever I come back in. He thinks this is hilarious but is too interested in his toys to actually try and copy me.

Definitely puts my mind at rest a little. Guess I just need to stop being such a worry wart and leave him be! My OH is very quiet by nature and I do wonder if he's going to have his personality. I never shut up so it's a bit weird for me! :haha:

Hey it's never too early to start teaching him sign language!
