I hope my story will help someone, and prevent them from making a huge mistake!
I went to an OBGYN on Tuesday at 5w5d, who did a transvaginal ultrasound and informed me that I had a blighted ovum
. I was told to expect cramping and bleeding within the next week. I was also given the option of taking misoprostol to induce abortion or a D&C. I chose to wait a couple of weeks
(Not really! I was waiting until I got back to the office to scan myself, and start looking for a new doctor). Regardless, I was devastated. I have had two miscarriages in the past....the first, 14 wks....the second, a 7wk blighted ovum. I was like "not again." I walked out of the office, sat in my car, burst into tears, and sat for 2hrs in the parking lot devastated
. My husband was also crushed. We are both in our 30s with no children.
Today (Thursday), I decided to scan myself. I did an abdominal ultrasound, and immediately saw a yolk-sac
. I measured the gestational sac and the yolk sac. The GS measured 6 wks. The yolk sac was 0.34cm (3.4mm). Normal and normal
. I pulled one of the OBs in the room to do a transvaginal ultrasound, and again, looked like a blighted ovum. However, because the yolk sac was clearly seen transabdominally, the doctor was determined to find it. The doctor had to point the probe directly up, which hurt like hell, and then we saw a yolk sac and fetal pole measuring 6wks with a heart beat
. I was informed that I have a tilted uterus, which can sometimes cause the misdiagnosis of a blighted ovum.
Below are some of the things that I have been thinking:
What if I had taken the prescription for misoprostol and started taking it on Tuesday?
How many women are being misdiagnosed as having blighted ovums when they have a tilted uterus?
I also began to wonder if my blighted ovum, 7yrs ago, was really a blighted ovum.
