I had a smear test a few weeks ago and my results came back yesterday, low grade dyskaryosis and HPV infection, I now have to go for a colposcopy, I'm so worried

Has anyone been through anything similar and got the OK?

I thought it was strange when I went for the test the nurse said my cervix was red and sore and checked her computer and muttered about the fact id never missed a smear test, so that worried me and now the results have come back abnormal.

We'd planned to start TTC this month but that's obviously on hold now.

Try not to worry. It's very normal. I don't know anything about the specific abnormality, but the fact it's low grade is very positive. It could also turn out to be nothing even after they biopsy it. I had abnormal results years ago and went for a colposcopy. It did turn out to be some sort of low grade dysplasia, but they were happy to leave it and weren't too concerned. My tests went back to normal within about a year or two. HPV infection is pretty much endemic in sexually active women (and men too obviously, but they don't really ever get tested). 80% of adult sexually active women are or have been infected. It can progress to cervical cancer in a very small percentage of them (some strains also cause genital warts), but in the vast majority, it causes a few abnormal smears and then within a few years the body clears the infection and it's fine. Obviously, you want to have it checked to make sure it's not more serious than it looks, but it shouldn't affect you TTC or in pregnancy (though personally I would get the colposcopy done before you're pregnant just so you know and feel comfortable moving forward, though some people do have them done during pregnancy). But I wouldn't worry too much unless you find out you have a reason to. Most likely it will check out fine and you can move forward with TTC, but have more regular smears until they know it's all gone back to normal.

I had my colposcopy and biopsy done maybe 2 years before we decided to TTC, but I got pregnant easily and I've not had any issues since and my smear tests are all normal now. Hopefully it will go as smoothly for you.

Thanks for replying :hugs: I can't wait for the appointment to get it over and done with. I'm think of phoning the Jo's trust (https://www.jostrust.org.uk) helpline as I'm so worried and anxious. I don't think it helps that I don't fully understand the results letter and what it all means.

My sister also went through this and was exactly the same as mind utopia- the results showed everything was fine and everything has been since. I hope you manage to find some support so you can put your mind at rest x x

I had a pap test done when I was around 12 weeks pregnant with my youngest. The results came back abnormal - I had an HPV infection and other abnormal cells that were concerning. I had a colposcopy done early in my third trimester. My doctor had said that things didn't look great (mid grade abnormal cells) but they sent everything off for testing. I was so worried. I googled every possibility and pretty much convinced myself I was dying. However, when the results came back everything was normal and there was nothing to worry about. For now, my doctor just recommends going for my yearly tests to keep an eye on things, but there's no immediate concern. I hope things turn out for you :hugs:

I'm hoping its just the HPV infection causing the cell changes, I have been really run down so I'm trying to eat healthy and take multivitamins in hope my body can fight the infection before my hospital appointment.
