I can't believe our lousy luck, the day before our first IVF consultation last week I got a letter to say that my recent smear test result is abnormal and I'm meant to wait 6 months for a repeat test to see if it clears up or if I need treatment.

I'm not at all worried about the result or treatment as I've had it before but the problem is that it's "really important" not to get pregnant until it's all sorted as pregnancy hormones apparently interfere with treatment.

Our consultant has said to try and get the repeat test done in January (3 months after the first) and she's willing to let me start on the pill as soon as I've had the test - I can just stop taking it if the results are abnormal again. But this has put us back by at least 3 months - and that's if they let me do the repeat test early.

Why oh why do these things happen at just the wrong time???

Has anyone else had this happen and did your doctor let you re-test early?

I kind of had the same problem and was about to have a consultation for egg share in return for free IVF.

I had part of my cervix removed 15 mths ago and was told I would have abnormal smears for 3 years.

One of my two favoured egg share clinics told me they wouldnt even do a consultation, and the other would go ahead with consultation but wanted a letter from colposcopy.

Very unexpectedly this morning I got the all clear, but I know that they dont like pregnancy when there are abnormal cells as the cells divide quicker when pregnant.

I am so sorry this has happened at this time. Sods law is a pain.

Easier said than done but focus on clearing it up.

I was dealt with on the nhs but my best friend got her abnormal smear dealt with privately with cone biopsy, so if you have insurance or the cash this might be a quicker way to a clear smear? Its considered extreme for nhs but it sorts it our quickly while nhs are more likely to adopt a wait and see, or laser approach. Good luck hun. XXX

Sorry to hear the news. I have had abnormal paps in the past which required treatment. I was overdue for a pap as we started this cycle of IVF. The nurse said to try and get a pap done before EC/ET as they don't like to touch your cervix after that. So I went and had a pap a week before EC. I was a little worried and prayed it would come back ok, which it did thankfully! But I did go through the thoughts of what would I do. I feel for you and the situation :hugs:, its the last thing you need right now. I hope there is a quick solution, hang in there :hugs:

I've had abnormal PAP tests before, but not in conjunction with IVF. I'm sure it's frustrating having to push things back. Hopefully they'll let you do the repeat early. :hugs:

Thanks girls, I'm trying to see it as a good thing - we're having lots of work done in our house at the moment so at least I know that I will have a more relaxing environment when we finally do start ICSI. Trouble is, I'm so impatient!!!

Its a pest of a setback, but def best to get sorted. FX for you that it wont be too long. XXX
