So we ordered some dinner last night and it came with some garlic sauce on the side. I ate some last night and tonight and just realized the sauce contains raw egg whites!! I'm freaking ooooout...can anyone help me come down a bit, I had no idea otherwise I wouldn't have eaten it of course!!

Lol! I've done that many times. Don't worry you will be absolutely fine xx

If it makes you feel better call your doctor, but honestly I would think as long as you aren't throwing up or have diarrhea than you should be okay.

Thanks hun I feel like such an idiot I'm so careful when I'm pregnant...but I didn't even think twice about what was in the sauce. Thanks for easing my mind :)

I was thinking of that think I should be ok just needed some reassurance!

I believe it's roughly one in 1000 egg has salmonella so your chances of becoming ill are very small. I can't count how many runny eggs and raw cookie dough I ate as a kid without incident. I'm sure you'll be fine :)

I had garlic sauce on Friday & never even thought that it could be harmful. Is it all garlic sauces or is there reason this one may be suspect? Mine was just from a take away...

Anyways, I've felt fine ever since & baby was kicking while I read your post so I'm sure you'll be fine too :hugs:

you'll be fine, you would have known by now had you caught salmonella. :hugs: we've all accidentally eaten stuff we're not supposed to, like the PP said the risk is very small.

I eat Cookie Batter

Also what ParisJeTadore said.

I think it's ok to eat runny eggs now as long as they have the lion stamp, which most do. I hope so as I had egg and soldiers yesterday!

This garlic sauce was from a Lebanese restaurant...I was wondering how they made it so creamy and I googled it and sure enough some are made with raw egg whites. I called the restaurant and they told me that yes they have rhh whites in them. One of those things I never would have suspected to have eggs in it at all!

Oh garlic sauce is the best I don't blame you! My pregnancy brain is really getting to me...ordered pad thai for lunch and forgot to order it without bean sprouts, took a few bites and realized there were sprouts so threw the whole thing away. The restrictions drive me nuts during preganncy...now I'm still hungry and just wasted $12 lol!

We can't have bean sprouts either?! I'm so bad at this!! And this isn't even my first pregnancy!:haha:

Honestly the pregnancy food restrictions are just stupid. I eat everything apart from raw clams. I eat sushi, sashimi, soft cheeses and Delhi meets. Never had a problem. I also discussed with my OB and he agreed saying the restrictions are exaggerated. The worst possible case scenario is that you catch a tummy bug type illness and vomit for 24 hrs. Not ideal, but the fetus remains unharmed it's just us who suffer. So the goal is to avoid those foods INCASE you get sick bc being sick with the runs and vomiting sucks that much more in pregnancy that's all. Not bc it will kill anyone but bc it's just a nuisance to catch. Sushi for ex is very healthy in pregnancy and if eaten at reputable places is totally fine! I eat it once a week. What do the women in Japan do? Besides my OB assured me that where I am all sushi is flash frozen so no bacteria can even survive. Eggs where I live are automatically pasteurized by law unless u buy them on a farm as are soft cheeses. So I say enjoy within moderation and please don't sweat the small stuff!

I have runny eggs with toast soldiers most weekends, yummy. :)
Didn't know you are not supposed to have beansprouts.

I've been avoiding soft cheeses and also deli meats to some extent but I do give in occasionally when I really feel like having some. I didn't know you can have sushi, my midwife said you're not supposed to. I love the sashimi from our local Japanese and have been avoiding it. Hmmm, tempted now.

I agree the restrictions are ridiculous...my problem is I'm the type of person that just worries uneccessarily so o just follow the restrictions so I don't drive my husband crazy with my worrying haha!

Good for you ladies though I dont see anything wrong with eating what you want at all!

For god's sake, don't worry! I wouldn't have thought to ask about the sauce. I'm sure I've had similar things. I eat bean sprouts all the time, actually, and never knew they were off-limits. For that matter, I eat soft cheese, too, and if I go to a catered work lunch with deli meat sandwiches then of course I eat them.
Our mothers and grandmothers did not know about these restrictions. In my first pregnancy, I went home to see my parents and my mom had made a big chocolate mousse, with all sorts of raw stuff (eggs and yolks, yes indeed!) in it. I didn't have the heart to tell her I couldn't eat it because it was for me, to celebrate my first child. It was DELICIOUS. I had no problems at all.
Most eggs you'll eat, and certainly the ones restaurants use, will be free of salmonella, and most dairy products will be pasteurized unless you specifically seek out the other stuff.
